Second, MIRABAI ENSEMBLE brings together the styles of Middle Eastern, Pakistani, and Western plainchant with extended jazz harmony, odd-time art rock, and solo dance improvisation for an a capella tour de force. In the finale, the Kriya Octect and Mirabai joint performance.

Dave’s True Story will appear at the Bach Dancing and Dynamit Society on Sunday. Dave’s True Story is a jazzy pop combo featuring Dave Cantor’s intelligent, sometimes quirky lyrics, Kelly Flint’s smooth-as-silk vocals and Jeff Eyrich’s acoustic upright bass laying a solid rhythm track beneath it all.
Spencer Harrington wrote in Jazziz, “The edgy genius of Dave’s true Story is in its ability to fuse the vibe of jazz from the 1940s and 50s with a modernist lyric sensibility: witty, urbane, and anxiety-ridden… jazz songwriting for a new generation.”
Hundreds of shows and great word of mouth have made Dave’s True Story a favorite on the New York underground scene. The New York City ensemble has built an impressive body of accomplishments since their formation in 1994. Winners of the 1995 Kerrville New Music Award as well as numerous and various other surprising accomplishments, they have performed nationally and internationally to wide critical and commercial acclaims
Dave’s True Story has samples of their music on their site.

Several people were seriously injured when a Pillar Point Harbor search-and-rescue boat was whacked by a “rogue wave” on its way to provide coverage for Mavericks last week, reports the County Times.
Of the six passengers, harbor administrator Shari Chapin suffered the greatest injuries. The weight of the fall threw her against the side of the boat, breaking her jaw in three places and knocking out many of her teeth, according to Harbor District Commissioner Sally Campbell. She said the doctors had put two plates in Chapin’s jaw and wired it shut.
Harbor Patrolman Don Coates suffered a compressed spine. Half Moon Bay Fire Department paramedic Chuck Wise badly bruised his ribs. They were taken to Stanford Hospital and are recovering. Draper’s brother, James Draper, and another paramedic escaped without serious injuries.

Japanese keyboard sensation 26-year-old Hiromi Uehara turns tradition on its head and plunges into a universe of new ideas where others of her generation have barely scratched the surface. Mentored by giants Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea, she is committed to making her music evolve. Her performance will feature compositions from her 2005 CD Spiral in a trio format that fuses elements of jazz, pop, classical and avant-garde into a deceptively intense listening experience.
Go to Hiromi’s page at her record label for videos of her in performance or to All Music Guide for a review and samples from her current album.
Doors Open at 3 PM, Music from 4:30 to 7:30 PM, $28.

Three spectators at Mavericks were injured by rocks falling from the cliffs, reports the Chronicle.
The victims were a 59-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son, Jolley said.
“They were watching the contest and some rocks let go from up on the cliff,’’ he said.
The woman was airlifted to Stanford Hospital with serious injuries, according to Jolley, who said her son, who was in “pretty good shape’’ was taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance.

The Mavericks big-wave surf contest was won Tuesday by Grant “Twiggy” Baker, 32, of Durbin, South Africa. Baker gained entry to the event by online voters. He takes home $30,000 for a perfect 10 on two rides of 40-foot waves, reports the Mercury News.
The biggest crowd ever turned out Tuesday for Mavericks on a perfect sunny afternoon. But, as always with the offshore surfing event, it was difficult to actually see any surfing. Click on each image for a larger picture.
