Dave’s True Story will appear at the Bach Dancing and Dynamit Society on Sunday. Dave’s True Story is a jazzy pop combo featuring Dave Cantor’s intelligent, sometimes quirky lyrics, Kelly Flint’s smooth-as-silk vocals and Jeff Eyrich’s acoustic upright bass laying a solid rhythm track beneath it all.

Spencer Harrington wrote in Jazziz, “The edgy genius of Dave’s true Story is in its ability to fuse the vibe of jazz from the 1940s and 50s with a modernist lyric sensibility: witty, urbane, and anxiety-ridden… jazz songwriting for a new generation.”

Hundreds of shows and great word of mouth have made Dave’s True Story a favorite on the New York underground scene. The New York City ensemble has built an impressive body of accomplishments since their formation in 1994. Winners of the 1995 Kerrville New Music Award as well as numerous and various other surprising accomplishments, they have performed nationally and internationally to wide critical and commercial acclaims

Dave’s True Story has samples of their music on their site.

Search-and-rescue boat’s passengers seriously injured at Mavericks

Several people were seriously injured when a Pillar Point Harbor search-and-rescue boat was whacked by a “rogue wave” on its way to provide coverage for Mavericks last week, reports the County Times.

Of the six passengers, harbor administrator Shari Chapin suffered the greatest injuries. The weight of the fall threw her against the side of the boat, breaking her jaw in three places and knocking out many of her teeth, according to Harbor District Commissioner Sally Campbell. She said the doctors had put two plates in Chapin’s jaw and wired it shut.

Harbor Patrolman Don Coates suffered a compressed spine. Half Moon Bay Fire Department paramedic Chuck Wise badly bruised his ribs. They were taken to Stanford Hospital and are recovering. Draper’s brother, James Draper, and another paramedic escaped without serious injuries.

The woman was airlifted to Stanford Hospital with serious injuries, according to Jolley, who said her son, who was in “pretty good shape’’ was taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance.

Even if you couldn't see a lot of actual surfing, it was a nice day to be on the bluffs.

The view was better with binoculars or a really long lens.
Dean Skelton
Workmen in a cherrypicker in El Granada enjoyed a clear view of the surf, but probably didn't see a lot of surfing.
Cheri Parr
Ironically, the best view of the actual surfing was probably on a big screen TV.

The biggest crowd ever turned out Tuesday for Mavericks on a perfect sunny afternoon. But, as always with the offshore surfing event, it was difficult to actually see any surfing.  Click on each image for a larger picture.
