Letter: Thanks to the pilots who flew over today……….

September 22, 2008

I must admit on a sunny day the droning low flying aircraft noise (I counted 10 in as many minutes a few weeks ago) is REALLY irritating, we live in the middle of Montara, no where near the HMB airport. I thought the rule was a minimum of 500 ft over residential areas.

Letter: Solving the traffic problems with Kelly Avenue at Cunha Intermediate

The same horrible accident is just waiting to happen at Farallon View School in Montara. Parents dropping off their children to the school seem not to care about anyone else’s safety on the road or sidewalk (most of Montara has no sidewalk), they break the speed limit and run stop signs, just because they are running late. Many children walk the roads to get to school and have to run the gauntlet of speeding cars passing them with only inches to spare. I must emphasize that I do mean a small group here, and I’m sure some are even local Montara parents in the mix of lunatics. My point is is only takes one mistake to kill or injure, no one wants to have to live with that for the rest of their lives.

I myself was nearly ran over by a careless parent while I was walking across a four way Stop section, as she slammed her brakes on at the last minute she gave me a look as if I was at fault for getting in her way! I’m six feet three and hard to miss, a four foot child could have had different luck. More speed bumps around schools and pedestrian activated walkways are the answer in my opinion, not armed police (why armed? I know some kids can get unruly but really!).

I agree with the author, local government take careful note, the people will be watching you closely for appropriate action and make it sooner rather than later.

Welcome to Montara Joel,

The fight against Menasco’s planned development below Farallone View is far from over, in fact it’s just beginning. If we as a community do not band together to keep on top of these guys we will end up with a town that looks like something from the valley, a sprawling badly planned ugly mess.

I hope you will join your neighbors in the fight.

I hope Mr. Menasco finally gets the message. The residents of Montara are wise to his ways as clearly demonstrated by yet another huge turn out to voice opposition to his ludicrous building proposals.

I guess we won’t be seeing you there Saturday Mr. Perkins, what a shame.

Mr Perkins,

The author is clearly referring to global warming when he mentions “if current trends continue”. If you are unsure what global warming is, then I suggest you take Mr Worens advice and do some research.

Global Warming is very real and it’s very much here with us, it’s our duty as the only species on Earth capable of doing something about it to act to try to control the damage. It’s the least we can do being as we are solely responsible for the damage to begin with, we owe that much to every other living thing on this planet.

Let’s hope for a huge turn out on Saturday.

Brian,

Do you live in Montara? If you do, I can’t understand how you can be so flip about this issue.

I fail to see the funny side of a community banding together to protect the environment that they live in from unscrupulous developers out to make a fast buck on a bad investment. And yes some of those people are bona fide experts (a Montara Water Board Official and a Traffic Engineer of 30 years standing to name two) both Montara residents.

I’m sure you would get ‘worked up’ if someone was trying to build a new road and seven very large houses literally in your back yard. And you are right, this will never get built, because the community won’t allow it to be built. That what communities do, they band together behind a common belief. If all people took your passive attitude we would be living in shopping malls on the coast by now.

If you have something intelligent to say then go ahead, otherwise please keep your sarcastic remarks to yourself, I’m sure I speak for most of the Montara residents who attended that meeting.

This was a very interesting meeting on many levels. It was clear that Ken Menasco (the developer) came to this gathering of the community to discuss his proposed project not only unprepared but uninformed. This did not go down well with the very well prepared and very well informed crowd of locals who had given up their evening to attend. He (Menasco) made very weak arguments in support of his plans, the main one seemed to be that he deserved a healthy return on his land investment.

It became crystal clear as the evening progressed that he had no real idea about, or had given any significant thought to, important issues such as water, sewerage, fire access, traffic, environmental or storm water drainage for the project. He was subsequently made to look very foolish by a crowd which contained local experts on many of these subjects.

My take is that Ken Menasco has made a bad investment choice, a choice he will have to live with. It would be even more foolish of him to pursue any further the idea of building anything on this totally unsuitable piece of land. Local resistance to this project is huge, passionate and focused.

Do yourself a favor Ken, go talk to POST see if they will buy it from you or give it to the community as a tax write off.

Thanks to Coastsider and Darin Boville for covering this issue and taking video footage so those who could not attend can share in the meeting.

Thanks for organizing this Barry, if not checked the litter heartlessly thrown from cars and trucks on Highway One ultimately ends up in the ocean.I hopefully will have several ‘Keep Montara Beach beautiful, PACK YOUR TRASH’ t-shirts to give away on the day to the early birds. See you there!

Keep up the great work Barry.

Devil’s Slide is open!

August 04, 2006

My commute to the City was a blissful 30 minutes instead of 90 minutes today!

A few thoughts though.

I do think that Caltrans should have had a public opening instead of a closed ‘dignitaries’ only ceremony, what’s with that? After all the emotional, financial and physical stress endured over the last four months by coastsiders it’s the least they could have done. Instead they throw a self back-slapping event at the taxpayers expense for themselves.

Political issues aside, I personally think Caltrans have handled the whole ordeal badly from a PR perspective. Barry, maybe a quick Coastsider reader poll would be in order to gauge reactions to the whole ordeal? People’s perceptions have a habit of becoming their reality, let’s see what the public really think. And maybe Caltrans can learn some valuable PR lessons for the future.

I’m glad it’s all over, I’m thankful it’s fixed, I’m happy to have my regular commute back, I hope coastal business recovers and I’m looking forward to a beer and taco at La Playa with my Pacifica buddies tonight!

Letter: Please support Open Mic Night at Caffe Lucca

May 31, 2006

As Mike points out this is a really fun night out, we have been to two events and had a blast. There are many extremely talented musicians and artists living right here on the coast and this event is a showcase for some of that talent. We always see our friends and neighbours there and meet new people every time, the sense of community spirit shines brightly here, come down and join in, support your community. By the way, I’ve heard of Montara Mark but who is this Montara Mike character? Better get down and check him out on June 3rd.
