Only 8 votes separate Ferreira and McClung; one vote separates King and McKimmie

Mike Ferreira now leads Bonnie McClung by a scant 8 votes in the Half Moon Bay City Council election and Alex King leads Bruce McKimmie by one vote, according to totals posted today at the County’s official election website.

As the county has been counting provisional ballots and verifying the identity of each voter, they have been posting successive sets of semi-official results.

On election night, Tuesday, November 8, Ferreira led by 59 votes, 1,549 to 1,490. King led McKimmie 599 to 594.

On Friday, November 11, Ferreira led by 30 votes, 1,727 to 1,697. King led McKimmie 648 to 644.

On Wednesday, November 16,  Ferreira leads by 8 votes, 1,780 to 1,772. King leads McKimmie 700 to 699

According to the County’s website:

Provisional Voting is an alternative Election Day voting method used when the voter has not met the new identification requirements or when the voter’s eligibility is in doubt.

Voters will be asked at the polling place to vote a Provisional Ballot if:

  • Their name is not on the roster at the polling place.
  • They are first-time voters and cannot provide the required identification to poll workers.
  • They are listed on the roster as absentee voters, but do not have an Absentee Ballot with them. Voters who do bring their Absentee Ballots to the polls are not provisional voters.
  • They moved and did not re-register at their new address.
  • They wish to vote on a ballot for a political party with which they are not affiliated.

The County Elections office won’t say how many ballots remain or how long it will take to finish counting, but they hope to finish by Friday.

I have been voting for 30 years. I had to vote on a provisional ballot because they did not send my absentee ballot as requested.  The poll workers assured me that it would be counted.  Looks like they have been mistaken.

“The County Elections office won’t say how many (provisional) ballots remain or how long it will take to finish counting, but they hope to finish by Friday.”

For the record, I voted for Ferreira.

Well, they can’t have that many provisional ballots, so I would hope they would be finished by today.  Mike and Bonnie especially need to know so they can make decisions about a recount, if necessary.
There is also an issue of fraud, which may or may not be a minor issue.  The HMB Review seems to think there may have been some non-resident (illegal) voting going on.
Did anyone else see the irony in Grady’s “Matter of Opinion” piece?  He gets the endorsement of the Review, then waits until after the election to blast their reporting.  Always the politician.  No apologies for illegal campaign signs, Mr. Mayor?  I know, you can’t help it if your supporters put signs in unauthorized or illegal locations, can you?

Grady was replying to an editorial published after the election, so I’m pretty sure he couldn’t have written it before the election took place.

The Review’s editorial lumped a bunch of very different things together and suggested an equivalence. It also snidely implied, without proving, that there was something unethical with the way the Voice of the Coast was published. That was irresponsible and divisive.  This week’s cartoon exacerbated the damage by suggesting that politically-motivated vandalism was some sort of random event and not a conscious decision.

I don’t believe that any candidates sanctioned illlegal, violent, or unethical behavior by their supporters. I have no idea why the Review is winking at it.

I agree.  The Review doesn’t seem to want to report on this type of activity, even though its serious and should be brought to light.  The kind of vandalism that Jim was personally subjected to is abhorrent and should be roundly condemned.

I placed signs in legal locations for Grady, Ferreira, and Skinner.  They were stolen within two days.

Caltrans repeatedly removed signs from the Caltrans right of way, from Half Moon Bay to Montara.

Caltrans is not supposed to remove signs when candidates have properly assumed responsibility for their signs.  Grady, Ferreira, and Skinner had done so, so the removal of their signs by Caltrans was improper.

Voice of the Coast witnessed a Caltrans crew removing signs that were outside of the Caltrans right of way.  While the crew lead did note that, “We’re just doing what we’re told,” most of the crew’s responses to questions were unprintable.

Jeff Weiss, Caltrans spokesperson, responded to our inquiry, saying, “If the workers took down any signs on private property, they did so in error.”

The crew members said that they were doing so at the request of the HMB police department.  “We did verify that someone from the Half Moon Bay police called to complain about the signs in the Right of Way,” Weiss said.

It is unclear which member of the police department made the call, and what their intention might have been.
