Advertise on Coastsider

Ads on Coastsider appear in the right-hand column of nearly every page (including this one). They are set off by a background color and a “Sponsored Links” headline at the top of every section.

We use text ads because they have been shown to be more effective than graphic ads, cost less for advertisers to develop, and allow for a consistent format with a clear call to action for our readers.

It’s easy and inexpensive to advertise on Coastsider.

How much does it cost to advertise on Coastsider?

Please email for our most recent rates. Discounts are available for nonprofits and longer-term contracts. We can also design other delivery options at lower prices. Sponsorships of specific sections and features are also available.

What does a Coastsider ad consist of?

There are two kinds of ads on Coastsider:

  • Graphic ads, 160 pixel wide by 300 pixel high, without animation. You supply us with your ad.  If you don’t have an ad, we can put you in touch with a designer.

  • Text ads of about 50 words, with a boldface headline at the top of the ad, the body in lighter type, your name, and a link to your web address. The web address is linked to your name and does not appear on the ad.

Will you edit my ad?

We will edit your ad for style, suitability, compliance with our guidelines. You will have a chance to review any changes before the ad goes live.

What rules must my ad follow?

All advertising on Coastsider must comply with our Terms of Use and with our Advertising Guidelines.

How does this compare to print advertising?

It’s difficult to say what the equivalent print ad to an online ad would be. But it’s important to understand that an online ad delivery represents the delivery of your ad onto the screen in front of one of our readers.  Print cost per thousand is based on the total circulation of a publication, and does not represent a guaranteed audience for your ad.

We recommend that most advertisers consider online advertising as part of an overall media mix and that they don’t put all their advertising dollars in a single medium.

What can you tell me about my ad’s performance?

We will supply you with information about how many times your ad was viewed and how many times a reader clicked on it if it contained a link. This report will be mailed to you weekly.

What’s the process?

1. Create an ad. Coastsider text ads have four elements:

  • Headline: Briefly get readers’ attention.

  • Message: What do you want them to do and why? Don’t include any formatting

  • Name: Your business or Web site name (this will be linked to your Web address).

  • Web address: http://sitename.com

2. Email your ad, along with the number of times you want it to appear, to

3. As soon as your ad has reviewed, we will send either (1) information on how to pay for your ad or (2) a request for changes.

4. Once we have received your payment information, we will schedule your ad.
