Where were the Big Wave notifications?

Everybody at Pillar Ridge got a notice.  We’re trying to get them to put up story poles so people can better understand the size of the project.

I live in Seal Cove and our household received a notice from the County Planning Dept. Contact Camile Leoung.
“BIG PAVE” will affect is all with 800+ parking spaces and no plan in the E.I.R. traffic portion of the report to mitigate traffic at the intersections (Cypress & HWY 1 in Moss Beach) and the main entrance to the Harbor -where there is at least a light and a larger intersection paid for by KN Properties.

Problems:
1. Comment period starts October 22, yet the BOD meeting is on Nov. 12. This leaves no time to study the EIR or to make meaningful comments.
Sup Gordon, delay the Nov. 12 BOD hearing and organize a EIR workshop.
2. No story poles for people to see the enormous scale. No EIR can be complete without story poles.
3. Lack of notification. This project will affect 22,000 people (and put additional 3,000 trips/day on Hwy 1), yet only a handful of neighbors were notified.

Welcome to the world of Rich Gordon, where the Supervisor’s main job is to grease the skids for whatever the developer/realtor lobby is asking for; which in this case, happens to be the Trojan Horse called Big Wave.

November 12th Sheezeee! We better get cookin’ The county has pulled fast ones before- This is the start of the Holiday season…they intended for a low turn-out at the Planning Commission by scheduling it thus!

The public comment hearing is Nov. 18.  Written comments accepted till Dec 7. That’s it - last chance.  Comments/questions raised on the Draft EIR will be addressed in the Final EIR to come out in Jan(?) but there won’t be any opportunity to change that. 

The developer says they won’t put up story poles until the Final EIR (Jan?) because the County can’t make them do it, and because it would interfere with the farmer’s winter crop and be a hardship for the workers’families.  Ever since they started pre-development by agriculture in 2003, there has never been a winter crop.  The crops are all harvested now.  Big Wave even had their harvest festival on the site.

How did y9ou happen to hear that Excuse…. REGARDING STORY POLES?

Watched Wed’s MCC meeting on TV last night - Supervisor Gordon’s aid read the applicant’s reply to the County’s request for the poles.

In short:
1. It is way too long (three phone books) to be reviewed in 3 weeks
2. Public input needed, workshop would be best
3. Story poles needs to be set up for public to see scale

At the Wednesday, October 28 Planning Commission meeting Lisa Grote summarized Section 15105 of the CEQA Guidelines which spells out the CEQA review timelines - not less than 45 days nor more than 60 days unless there are “unusual circumstances”.  Lisa Grote, San Mateo County Planning Director said “unusual circumstances” usually relate to failure to notice, but obviously there is lots of discretion as to what this term means. Lisa Grote stated the Planning Director has the authority to extend the deadline, not the Planning Commission.  Lisa said staff will agendize a discussion of the extension of time for the November 18th Planning Commission hearing. Planning Commissioner Gail Slocum tried to get the discussion scheduled for the next meeting (November 3) so people could better plan their time, but Lisa Grote said that Agenda was already published and could not be changed.

Please consider emailing Lisa Grote, Planning Director and request additional time to review the DEIR (three phone book thick volumes).

We need to do something and do it fast.  I am ready and willing to print, post, deliver and pay for flyers that will help spread the word that this monstrosity is coming.  It seems like our opposition is far from galvanized.  We have to come together and move forward as a group.  We should set up a meeting and move from there.  If we don’t motivate, BigWave will come and the coastside will never be the same.

The developer refuses to put up story poles during this critical public comment period.  For size comparison, the warehouse building at 850 Airport St. just north of the Pillar Ridge community and easily seen from Hwy 1, is 24 ft tall.  Big Wave plans 4 office park buildings that are twice that tall (46.5 ft is the latest dimension they give - add to that 4 ft of solar & wind turbines on the roof, plus raised grade).
