Today the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) announced that it has acquired Wavecrest, a 206-acre property located on Cabrillo Highway on the southern tip of Half Moon Bay. POST purchased the land on January 29 from private owners for $13.5 million, to be paid over the next three two years.

“We are very pleased to preserve this stunning Coastside property,” said POST Executive Vice President Walter T. Moore. “The land here has everything going for it—open meadows, winding trails, sweeping vistas, dramatic bluffs, thriving wildlife, popular ball fields and a key location at the edge of Half Moon Bay. The protection of Wavecrest means the community is no longer at risk of losing this amazing natural and recreational resource. From now on, residents and visitors will come here and know that this beautiful, vital landscape will remain this way forever.”

CORRECTION: The original version of the press release said it was to be paid over three years, not two.

POST first announced its intention to work with the property’s sellers last August. Since then, community members have expressed their strong support for POST’s involvement in the protection of Wavecrest.

Over the past three decades, Wavecrest had been the focus of extensive plans for development, ranging from 200 to 600 residences as well as commercial development. Had any of those proposals moved forward, the property’s natural features would have been dramatically compromised. However, none of the plans came to fruition, and the sellers, after considering multiple options, decided to approach nonprofit land trust POST about preserving the land permanently.

“It’s been a long road, and now the best outcome for all parties involved has been achieved,” said Bruce Russell, CEO of Kenmark Real Estate Group and representative of the land’s sellers. “This arrangement is what’s best for the sellers, the land and the community. We’re pleased to have made this sale to POST.”

Wavecrest has long been a popular destination among Coastside residents for hiking, jogging, bird-watching, dog-walking and baseball.  It is ideally situated to provide a key link along the California Coastal Trail, and is a haven for raptors, which can often be seen swooping over the windswept fields.

According to Moore, POST’s purchase of the land will not change public access to the property. “We’re entering into a planning stage that will help us determine the long-range use of the property. We are also working with the city of Half Moon Bay to continue use of the ball fields, so that the community can continue to benefit from this recreational resource,” he said.

It’s really great that POST, Kenmark, and the owners have pushed through to conclusion. This is going to mean a lot to future generations of Coastsiders.

Mike F. has been taking so much abuse lately. Without Mike negotiating with Kenmark this would never have occurred.

Kudos to Mike. My hearftelt thanks to him as well as the thanks of all Coastsiders for many generations into the future.

Mike and Jim Grady. You guys are my heros.

A willing seller, to a willing buyer, and generations in the future will benefit from this acquisition - wonderful and congratulations to all who helped make this happen!

Isn’t it interesting that the $13.5 million selling price for the property is less than that lost by all of us payers in CUSD who have been paying off the CUSD Measure K $35 million bonds since 1996 -waiting for a new middle school!

Remember the 2003 fight over the City of Half Moon Bay “Build Our School Now” Initiative that would have forced CUSD to abandon their Wavecrest fixation and build at the Cunha site? Do you remember who fought the Initiative? The Cunha School would have been complete now and millions saved starting even by that late date!

Remember all of the Review’s “Matter of Opinion” pieces by Jim Larimer and Kenneth E. Jones, President of School Board, saying that construction at Wavecrest was ‘just around the corner’?

Now the same groups, including PCF-CCF folks, are giving us advice on what Half Moon Bay should do! What do you think, with their track record, we should tell them what to do with their ‘sage’ advice?

Kind thoughts are always appreciated, John, but there were no negotiations with Kenmark by me after leaving the Council. The parties - POST, Kenmark, and the owners - came together quite on their own, although I’m sure there were lots of folks encouraging them right up to the finish line.

Darin Boville has just put up a video of Barry’s interview with Bruce Russell on the Wavecrest site at http://www.montarafog.com/

Ken Johnson has a great memory. As recently as 2004, both Larimer and Schreurs were still cheerleading forcefully for Wavecrest rather than going with the common sense Cunha rebuild. While the tab for the unbuilt middle shool kept rising, they kept bullying (what they do best) for a Wavecrest middle school.

My response to them at the time:

Again, many thanks to Bruce Russell, the owners, and POST for making this amazing accomplishment happen.

C’mon Mike Don’t be so self effacing. If you and Jim Grady, while a sub-committee of the HMB City Council to redo the Owner’s Participation Agreement suit, hadn’t spent so many hours talking with Bruce Russell to bring forth the revised Wavecrest Village proposal it never would have happened.

Jim Grady and you need not be shy. I know that there were no negotiations after you left the City Council but you surely laid the groundworks for this to gave happened.
