Two men wearing masks and gloves tied up a postal truck driver at the Montara post office some time after 6pm Tuesday night. The driver’s postal keys were taken, but the post office is saying that no mail was taken. He was reported missing, found, and freed some time after 10pm. No injuries were reported.

The driver was a contract driver who picks up mail on the coast. The suspects were described as two black men wearing masks and gloves.

The Postal Service is changing locks at its facilities in the area.

There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the office of the Postal Inspector at (415) 778-5991, or the Sheriff.

Thanks for making us aware of this story - this is terrible. Awful for the driver, awful for the community.

According to an employee at the Montara post office, the only thing taken was a set of keys which would have provided access to facilities and collection boxes. Everything that could have been affected has already been rekeyed.

No mail was taken. No money was taken.

Why on earth would someone risk arrest for robbery, aggravated assault, and several federal felony charges for keys? How could they hope to profit? Since the truck drives up from the south, the best they could do is hit stops to the north. Stops to the south would already be collected.

This is not only awful, but highly suspicious as well.

Interesting how the details are different in the various news stories on this.

Yesterday NBC11 reported that the driver was tied up in the back of his truck. The Chronicle and the San Mateo County Times report he was tied up in the back of the post office.

The Times makes no mention of the race of the robbers. Given Montara's racial makeup, the claims made in other papers about the robbers being black, that's an interesting omission.

What a risky move, to ambush the driver around 6PM. There's still quite a bit of traffic as people get home from work and check their mail. Two men laying in wait would stick out like a sore thumb. I'm surprised that no one witnessed this ambush.

Today the Chronicle reports "Postal Inspector Jeff Fitch would not say whether anything besides the keys had been stolen."

Keep a careful eye on your bank and credit card statements.

The Review covered it today (t plus 7 days):

Odd, there didn't seem to be any real new information over the NBC11, Chron, and SMC Times articles.
