Trying some new ads on Coastsider

You may notice some new, non-local, advertising on Coastsider. We’re experimenting with an ad network, mostly because I’m planning to write about ad network optimization in the near future and thought it would be interesting to try it out. It’s unlikely to generate much real revenue.

I’ve set the filters pretty high on the network, so the ads shouldn’t be too obnoxious, but I’ve already seen one “jittery dialog box” ad, and I’ll probably take the whole thing down if it becomes a problem. If you see any obnoxious ad behavior, drop me a line at and I’ll add it to the record. If you happen to notice which network delivered the ad, you can include that information as well, but it’s not necessary.

Well, that wasn't a very successful experiment. I definitely got more jittery ads than I expected (i.e. none), and even the ads that met my criteria were really ugly and lame. I've removed the network from my ad rotation and I feel much better now.

Barry,

What “jittery dialog box” ads? Never saw any! Of course, I NEVER see any!

I thought web site owners and advertisers, like you, who are intelligent enough to know that they are counter productive to their goals, stopped the little buggers. That may, in part, explain the financial success of Google; less for Yahoo; and the flat lined MS.

Since shortly after the first of these slimed out, they have been stoppable to the tech capable. I commonly use Mozilla Firefox not just because I use Apple, Linux/Unix and MS for a common user interface, but also because of the control capabilities designed and built in since the early days of the project. When MS slimed Netscape, MS IE was targeted for replacement. Mozilla Firefox 3.0 rc1 is available now and working!

Control of the firewalls, etc also helps.

Barry,

I applaud your effort to suppress the obnoxious ads at the start and to remove the effort rapidly when that proved problematic.
