(Pacifica, CA, November 10, 2004) – The San Mateo County chapter of Surfrider Foundation will be joined by founder Glenn R. Hening at the “Endless Winter” benefit event commemorating two decades of working to preserve our oceans, waves and beaches. The event will feature tasty fare, libations, a special presentation by Mr. Hening on the upcoming release of his new book Waves of Warning, and live “surf” sounds from local Bay Area bands: the Lava Rats, Aquamarines and Drifting Sand. The event is sponsored in part by Pedro Point Surf Club and the Pacifica Beach Coalition.
About Featured Speaker Glenn R. Hening: Glenn is recognized for having earned a unique reputation of “asking the hard questions” as modern surfing’s most eloquent and incisive “provocateur” according to The Surfers Journal, the industry’s premier magazine.
An environmental and community activist, teacher, lecturer and surfer for more than three decades, Glenn founded Surfrider Foundation in 1984, leading the concepts and establishment of surfing’s largest environmental organization. A decade later, he co-founded the Groundswell Society to address the surfing community’s social issues both in and out of the water. Glenn has spoken on a wide variety of subjects including the environmental movement in surfing, landmark innovations in surfboard design, and the origins of wave riding by ancient Peruvian cultures dating back 3,000 years. In 2002, he led an expedition of surfers to Northern Peru to visit archaeological sites thought to be built by the first surfers. For the past eight years, Glenn has organized the Rincon Clean Water Classic, regarded as the best “contest” in California for both the quality of its waves and the friendly, community atmosphere. He also recently participated in the Ultra-Style Expression Session, a special exhibition of the most stylish surfers in the history of California surfing.
Glenn has also authored two extraordinary articles on surfing’s iconic Mickey Dora, as well as the hard-hitting essay, ‘The Stain on the Soul of Surfing,” addressing localism in surfing that inspired
USC Film School graduates to produce an award-winning documentary. He is the editor for Groundswell Society’s publications featuring more than 100 articles on significant trends, projects and people unrecognized by surfing’s mainstream media. His literary genius has also been featured in “The Glide,” a coffee table book on longboards and the renaissance of modern surfing.
Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. The organization’s 60 U.S. chapters represent 37,000 members with affiliations in Australia, Japan, France, and Brazil.
