3.8, 1.4 magnitude earthquakes near Sweeney Ridge

Yes, we felt it, a shake and a jolt. Since it is close to us, felt larger than it was, apparently.

CAL Juried Show?

April 13, 2011
Dear Mr. Kirkpatrick, We appreciate your taking the time to write, and more importantly, to check out our gallery & museum (especially with the cost of fuel these days to get anywhere). Though the current show may not be to your liking (as it is with others we have heard from, who enjoy local photography), we have new exhibits every month, and each one is different. Last month's show featured local plein-air painters, along with legendary painter Galen Wolf. The month before, it showcased acclaimed…

PCT could be a breath of fresh air for Coastside TV

April 12, 2011
I agree. MCTV is sorely lacking as a community television station. Too much to go into about that! Unless MCTV has changed from the exclusive programming they were presenting for many years to opening up their studio (if they have one) to the community, PCT is an excellent alternative.

Gray Squirrels on the Coastside?

October 26, 2010
Years ago, I used to take the bus from Redwood City to Palo Alto. There is a field that you cross when going to University Avenue. When entering that field, I saw that it was overrun with squirrels of all colors - red, gray, black, and even two white ones. They can look cute singly, but in numbers, can be downright creepy. They also have the potential for spreading diseases.

Hmmm, interesting. I guess the raccoons are too busy hanging around here in MB with the skunks to bother with Montara's gray squirrels!

Gray Squirrels on the Coastside?

October 25, 2010
Grey squirrels were part of the landscape in Redwood City, where I lived for almost 30 years. However, I grew up in Pacifica, and never saw them there. 3 years ago, I saw two grey squirrels in Pacifica, which was as surprising as seeing deer in Pacifica. I guess the critters are heading out to the coast....

I like the new layout - much more generous use of this space.

Will there be a local book signing for June’s newest book?

April 06, 2010
Bay Book is where June always had her book signings. She had planned a book signing there for the Moss Beach book as well, and wanted Michael & I to join her. Kevin had expected it. In addition (as Kevin pointed out), his wife Lynne's family is mentioned in the book, as she grew up in MB, with deep family roots there. I like the idea of something in MB, though there are no bookstores in MB proper. Anyone who put the event together would have to have the energy & resources to coordinate it. Dave Cresson…

Will there be a local book signing for June’s newest book?

No book signing, but Kevin Magee of Bay Book HMB would like to have a tribute/party for June, though I don't know the details. Here is Kevin's contact info: 650-726-3488 [email protected]

No injuries in bad landing at HMB Airport

I recognize that aircraft, and am glad he wasn't hurt. I heard the sirens today, and am also happy that it didn't land in our park.

Coastside author June Morrall, 1947 - 2010

January 11, 2010
I received this from June's cousin today: Dear Friends of June Morrall, I'm writing to inform you of the Memorial Gathering for June, which will be held this Sunday, January 17th, at the Oceano Hotel & Spa at 2 pm. This event will not so much be a formal "service" but rather an informal "gathering" to commemorate June's work and legacy on the Coastside, and we invite all those interested in attending to bring something that they may have to share, whether it'd be pictures, articles, books or a story…

June's cousin will let us know when services will be held, and I will post that information here when I get it.

Can (and should) blufftop real estate be saved from natural erosion?

January 06, 2010
No. Mother Nature will have her way, if not now, some other day. Michael's sister & her husband live in a house on Esplanade, across the street from where there used to be houses, and up the street from the apartments in question. She accepts the fact that when the erosion is close to reaching their side of the street, it will be time to go. There is only so much that can be done (and spent) before the inevitable. I lived in Pacifica throughout my childhood, regularly hiking down the cliff trails…

June was a good friend. We had gotten especially close in the past two years when doing photography for her book on Moss Beach. She visited us at the gallery quite often, and we visited her at her home, with the garden sanctuary she was so proud of. June's husband Burt referred my husband Michael to Ron Paul for a photo shoot with him, then Michael did photography for another of June's books. I got to do at least half of the photos for the upcoming book on Moss Beach - I shot them all for June. She…

We need a way to cross Highway 1 safely in Moss Beach and Montara

I took another look at that corner today. We need a stoplight there.

We need a way to cross Highway 1 safely in Moss Beach and Montara

December 12, 2009
When I lived in RWC, we had these same issues. The roads there are not as narrow in MB, but there is a lot more traffic. When I moved there in 1971, several roads were widened to accomodate more vehicles. What happened when the roads were widened is that traffic increased. Now the roads are still not wide enough. Overpasses and underpasses DO work. I used the ones in Pacifica regularly. I know the overpass that Terry referenced, because I took it often, though it always made me nervous, as it was…

Tsunami History at the Princeton Harbor

November 23, 2009
Hi Cid, I received your email about my comment here on Big Wave, and responded, but my emails to you were returned. I am thanking you on here, then, for the follow-up, even though I had already written to the Planning Department, via snail mail and email, last week, about my disapproval of the project. All the best, Deb Wong

Tsunami History at the Princeton Harbor

I have to agree with you. For the past year, I have been reading up on the project, trying to keep an open mind. After all, my brother is autistic, and I feel for anyone trying to find a place for their disabled loved ones. My conclusion so far is that as admirable as Big Wave's objectives are, in reality, it will be a great mismatch as far as location goes. Those who are very much for the project (many of whom I know personally) don't live next door to where it will be built. They see the possibilities…
