Jim Eggemeyer, acting Director of Planning and Building for San Mateo County, has been appointed to the position permanently by San Mateo County Manager David Boesch. Eggemeyer succeeds Lisa Grote, who left San Mateo County employment to take a position with the City of San Mateo.

Eggemeyer joined San Mateo County in 1993 as a planner. He then served in various planning roles before becoming a deputy planning director in 2005. He was appointed interim planning director in February 2010.

Eggemeyer will lead a department that plans and regulates land use in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. These areas include El Granada, Montara, Moss Beach and the rest of unincorporated Coastside and all other areas not within city limits.

The Planning and Building Department is organized into three sections: Long Range Planning, Current Planning and Building Permits and Inspections. The department has 52 positions with an annual budget of approximately $11 million.

In the coming year Eggemeyer will focus on updating the County’s General Plan – the blueprint for the future – and other ordinances in collaboration with stakeholders to enhance the community, promote public health and protect natural resources.

Eggemeyer earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and worked as a landscape architect and planner before joining San Mateo County.
