Haggerty, Ketcham, elected to MCC; Write-in candidate Stein holds tenuous lead

CORRECTION: We called this too quickly. See the correction at the bottom of this story.

Dan Haggerty and Lisa Ketcham, and Laura Stein have been elected to the Midcoast Community Council, as of 11pm, with 9 of 9 precincts reporting.

Stein’s slender margin of victory (six votes) was nonetheless a significant achievement. She was running as a write-in candidate. Stein tied fourth-place finisher Leonard W. Stone II in mail-in votes, with 302 votes. But she gathered eight more votes than Stone on election day.

Candidate Percentage Vote by Mail Early Voting Election Day Grand Total
Dan Haggerty 30.12% 657 5 223 885
Lisa Ketcham 29.41% 649 3 212 864
Laura J. Stein 14.19% 302 1 114 417
Leonard W. Stone II 13.99% 302 3 106 411
John Oehlert 12.29% 263 1 97 361

With Stein’s narrow margin of victory, a recount is likely.

CORRECTION: Dennis Paull emailed us a more accurate interpretation of last night’s results:

The vote counting isn’t done yet. Late arriving absentee ballots (via the mail or at the polls) and paper ballots cast at the polls as well as the provisional ballots remain to be counted. This will probably be done today through next Monday.

Then there will be a 1% manual tally late next week most likely followed by the ‘official’ count certified within the next 3 or 4 weeks. Only after that will there be a recount if Stone wants to pay for it, or by Laura if the lead changes and she wants to pay for it. Since the turnout was low, there are not a lot of ballots to count.

The coastside is an excellent place to live if you want proof positive that your 1 vote, does indeed count!  Congrats to the winning slate, a team I know did a great deal of old fashioned hard work to get out the vote.  It seemed that everywhere I went today, I ran into one or all of the candidates.  Congrats in particular to Laura Stein for the impressive numbers on a write in candidacy.

I also want to thank all the election volunteers who manned the polling places today.  While foot traffic was light, they remained in high spirits, and are integral to the process.

Now let’s keep movin’ on 2012!

There will be updates on the results at https://www.shapethefuture.org/ tomorrow (Thurs.) at 4:30 PM and again next Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 PM.

Candidates or their representatives will probably be hanging out at the elections office to watch the counts being made. The rest of us can make our guesses about which ways the paper ballots and the provisional ballots are likely to trend.
