The litter plague

The first day I drove the Devil’s Slide after it opened, I noticed immediately how clean and litter free the roadside was. Cal Trans had obviously taken the time to make the whole route as nice as possible for the grand re-opening. It took only a matter of a couple of weeks for the litter to re-appear. It’s now back with vengeance, cans, plastic bottles, fast food wrappers and beer cans litter the road side and will eventually end up in the ocean if not picked up. Does anyone know if the ‘adopt a highway’ program is active here?

Litter is a modern plague in our ‘don’t-care-throw-away’ society, it’s ugly, unhealthy and bad for the environment. Next time you drive 280 to the City check the roadside, it’s disgusting. The average American individually generates 7 pounds of trash a day, if we are to control this plague we need to educate our children to respect nature and the environment.

So, anyone interested in a Devil’s Slide clean up?

Well, you’ve certainly come to the right place. I’m embarassed to admit that Hwy 1 from Montara to Gray Whale Cove (East side, anyway)  is adopted by Coastsider and I’m overdue to clean it.  Got into some bad habits during the outage.  The West side of the road is, if I remember correctly from my commute, adopted by Gregory Watson Print Brokerage in Montara http://www.gregorywatson.com/aboutus.htm

I’m happy to coordinate this. Do we have some other volunteers?

Thanks Barry! How many volunteers do we need to make it viable?

BTW. I have found out that Greg Watson no longer is responsible for the other half of the Side.

I don’t know exactly where your territory begins but if we were to schedule it for Sunday, November 12th, the election will be over, political types will have some time, and we might even be able to remove some leftover election signage.

So, Barry, how does the 12th sound?  If it works for you I’d like to pitch it at tomorrow’s Beach Cleanup.

So that I don’t miss anything, here’s the text of Dana’s email announcment of the Cleanup which is similar to her announcement at the City Council meeting:
****************
Please join us this coming Saturday at Francis State Beach (at the
end of Kelly Avenue in Half Moon Bay) for our First Annual
Post-Pumpkin Fest Beach Clean-up.
Bring your family along and make a day of it at the beach!  We’ve
reserved a group of picnic tables and BBQ pits for the event.  And
even though it’s not Halloween yet, you can expect to find a shark or
two - and maybe even a mermaid - helping out!
What:   LCP’s First Annual Post-Pumpkin Fest Beach Clean-up
Where:  Francis State Beach, at the end of Kelly Ave., in Half Moon Bay
When:   Saturday, October 21, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
We will be supplying leadership and the few items you’ll need, and
giving out commemorative “We Love the Coast” t-shirts to everyone who
helps out.  Also: High school student volunteers get Community
Service credit!
The daily parking fee at the Francis State Beach lot will be waived
for our beach cleanup volunteers and their families.  So please also
bring a lunch and join us at the picnic tables and BBQs afterward.
We recommend wearing closed-toe shoes, layered clothing, hat and sunscreen.
If you have any questions, please send me an email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
I look forward to seeing you at the beach!

Will the care for the roadsides include replanting the native vegetation that was chopped down on the shoulders to create a more sterile looking road for the city politicians showing up for Reopening Day?
