So, who decided to plop an electric-blue 50-gallon plastic drum right in front of a million-dollar view of the Pacific Ocean at Surfer’s Beach?
I agree that dog-escorts need to pick up after their pawed pals, but perhaps the facility should be located in less obstructive location?

As a community service in response to complaints, a few years ago Granada Sanitary District arranged for our solid waste contractor Seacoast Disposal to place and service trash cans at Surfer’s Beach.  I just spoke with Seacoast’s manager about the above post (and I will forward a link to this thread to her).  She will take a look and see what can be done.  I requested that they replace the blue can with a gray one like all the rest in the area, and that it be moved south a bit to where the bushes block the view anyway.  Moving it may take time since all the cans need to be chained down or they grow legs and disappear.

Moving the can, and making a more subtle color will help a lot. Also, does it really need to be so big? Fifty gallons is a heck of a lot of dog waste. Maybe something more svelte would do the job. Thanks again.

I think that stating it is just for dog waste is confusing the placement with other items at the same location.  There is nothing else to chain a garbage can to along that entire stretch of walking area.  The fact that dog bags are there doesn’t imply that the garbage can is only for dog waste.

A lot of people use that access area especially during good weather.  There is also usually a lot of beach garbage right in that same area.

Dog owners aren’t the only users, by a long shot: On busy-beach weekends that can overflows with picnic trash. I fear that replacing it with a smaller can would only exacerbate the ugliness.

Yes.  DJ Montoya and Lisa Maulhardt beat me to it with posting those points.  If you see the cans overflowing, please notify the Granada Sanitary District office at 650-726-7093.  Seacoast’s manager told me that they are emptied 4 times per week.  My concern was holiday weekends, but they work on holidays (just not on Sundays), so the cans should be emptied early Monday morning even on 3 day weekends.

Note that the mutt mitt dispenser there was placed at the request of the GSD Board, and is refilled by GSD office staff.  Since GSD has no field staff and Surfer’s Beach is within the city limits, they got Half Moon Bay’s Public Works department to place the post and mount the dispenser.  HMB PW staff apparently chose the specific location.

Granada Sanitary District has a good working relationship with Seacoast Disposal.  All it took was an informal phone call from me to the manager of Seacoast, and a few days later it’s taken care of.  (For those who don’t know, I’m on the GSD Board of Directors.)
