Coastal Home Insurance weirdness

We are in the process of renewing our home insurance and had one company flatly refuse to give us a quote for cover as we lived within a 1000 ft of a large body of water (that would be the Pacific Ocean I’m guessing!) even though my wife informed the person on the phone that we are 165 ft above sea level. Has anyone else on the coast had this problem with auto cover or any other form of insurance?

Sorry, I misread the message elsewhere. I thought the trouble was with car insurance.

Maybe this is the insurance industry’s way of reclassifying a large number of coastal properties into a higher risk category, to which they will apply much higher rates. But if they are worried about tsunamis, why don’t they separate out that risk, make insurance for it optional, and charge separately for it as they do for earthquake insurance?

Have you been able to locate another insurer? It would be interesting to know if all the companies are going to try this bit.

Carl, yes it was my mistake not yours, it is our home insurance they declined to cover, not auto.

Your theory sounds feasible knowing insurance companies. But, fortunately we have found another company that is happy to cover us. I was just initially taken aback that we were refused cover and wondered if anyone else on the coast had similar experiences.
