I’ve only seen one post in January regarding volunteer opportunities in our community.
A quick google turned up “Coastside Live”, which gave me many options to start.  What I wanted to know is if anyone had experience with any of these organizations.  In the past, I’ve met some VERY committed people, who tend to take their volunteer service a focal point of their lives.  It’s very overwhelming!

I’d love some opinions on where to start, what people’s experiences are, and how I can best use my time to make our beautiful little town a better place.

There is a great need for volunteers in many different areas all over the Coastside. Meals on Wheels always needs folks to deliver food to people who are homebound. Coastside Hope, in El Granada, (726-9071) provides food and many social services for those in need. Speak with Fatima, and she will let you know how you may help. Senior Coastsiders, (726-9056) runs a “friendly visitor” program which provides a few hours of companionship to an elder who cannot leave the house. They have several other things going on, like their Thrift Shop on Kelly Avenue, (speak with the manager, CR). The Venerable Marion Herreid will help you find a volunteer position with the Seniors that you are sure to enjoy. Coastside Adult Day Health Center, one of the best in Northern California, welcomes volunteers to come and entertain their clients. Call Dawn at 726-5067. With the closing of the Family Medical Clinic, Rotacare, a free clinic sponsored by Rotary International, and open only on Wednesday evenings, is going to need reliable volunteers more than ever. They are located upstairs above the Dead Clinic, and there is always a need for registrars, particularly if you also speak Spanish, as well as people to help with charts and paperwork. I spent about 5 years of Wednesday nights up there, and never got bored! Anyone can come to have a huge free breakfast at “No Strings Attached” on Saturday mornings at the Senior Center. They usually need cooks, pot-washers, and help cleaning up the hall afterwards. If you like drama in your life, Coastal Repertory Theatre,  (726-0998), has volunteers doing everything from taking tickets, painting scenery, to starring in a musical. I know that there are many volunteer opportunities that I haven’t mentioned, but these are a good start. Oh. I forgot the Kelly Avenue Catholic Worker at 726-6621. They do food distribution and are working on a garden, among many other services to the community

Have a Good Time!!!!

Are you interested in educational, environmental, or social volunteering?

If environmental, Surfrider San Mateo County Chapter needs:

1. an HTML savvy person who will put together once-a-month email messages.
2. water testers at both Francis and Surfers’ beaches on Friday mornings, every other Friday.
3. water test reader at the lab every Saturday
4. fundraiser person
5. meeting coordinator

Each roles ask for >2 hours a month.
