Letter: It’s time to conserve water and save money

May 24, 2006
Sophia Good letter. Since the cost of water is tied to energy costs and there is a well publicized need for infrastructure improvements to hetch-hetchy, it is not surprising that rates are going up. Future rate increases could be structured to improve water conservation by severely penalizing users who go over a certain threshold. The current tiering structure does not do enough to encourage efficient irrigation or landscaping. I would say that doubling the rate for residential customers who use…

Is the term "no-growther" a derogatory label ??

Opinion: Fear of Foothill

OK, here is a new idea. A traffic circle: Main street is one-way north from 92 to HWY 1. HW1 is south only from Main and 1 to main and 92. 92 is west only from 1 and 92 west to the current 92 and main. there would be no traffic lights necessary between 92 and one north or south. The current shopping center in the middle of the (albertsons) would have an access problem. maybe the city could put a redeveleopment bond to the voters to get that hidoeus strip mall torn down and replacec with different…

(PS: This is a response to Ken Mcnutt's comment that suggests a mud wrestling match to decide our diffences. I should have adressed it properly).

Mud wrestling requires wasting valuable water and so called "mud puddles" are often vital parts of vernal eco-systems. "dirt", a componate of mud, is also a valuable rescource: in place its supports plants; on the run in our drainage systems is poses a threat to clean water and a healthy ocean.

Carl, While reading your comment it hit me that civilization (I don't think its PC to use "western" anymore) is not sustainable anywhere because, in part, of its dependance on hydrocarbons for water, food, energy and the extraction of "minerals". Is there any place on earth where human activity is sustainable ?? I essentially agree with your position and I applaud you for not focusing entirely on the middle class, cadilac problems of living on the coast. WE just see things a little differently. Here…

I am starting a new group called the League for Coastal Planning. The LCP will be a political action committe dedicated to rational planning on the coastside. We look forward to a debate with The LCP (League for Coastal Protection) about interpretations of the LCP (local Coastal Plan). I will change the name and acronym of my group if the other LCP (the second one) agrees to change their name so I can say I support the LCP with out confusing people. PS Who nomed that gorup and what were they thinking???

MF, "That does not mean, however, that the City cannot regulate other applications in order to smooth out the average to 1%. In fact, the City has said it would, as it should." In other words, the individuals who own a single infill lot are going to get screwed. some of the infill lots have been vested for fifty years. Are you saying that it is proper to give a new development priority? Tim

Caltrans gives HMB a chance to discuss traffic light

May 22, 2006
KSC, The crane presently being used at the site must be disassembled to pull in the outriggers. the pictures show it takeing over 20 feet of road width. I doubt traffic couild pass until this phase of the project is done. After the piers are placed there will be a period when the road re-building phase might allow one way traffic. Perhaps the best solution for morning is re-striping the highway south of El Granada to have two lanes for southbound. I think a commuter lane from the bridge in miramar…

I suggest that we use the the "8 mile cul du sac" in advertising the coast. The "17 mile drive" does wonders for the Monterey Penninsula.

Caltrans may end “free” right turns onto Hwy 92 for HMB commuters

May 21, 2006
Barry, Here are some facts: the design and planning criterea for residences for both HMB and the county contain NO requirement for solar design. The County, the city and their respective DRCs (that Barb speaks at frequently) seem to want the Cape Cod or Spanish look over anything else. Some other bay area jurisdictions have waived all fees and design review for solar panel permits. nothing here. The evidence you say is lacking is that nothing is said in the local debate about legislating solar power…

Caltrans may end “free” right turns onto Hwy 92 for HMB commuters

May 21, 2006
Since Barb is drifting so will I: highway one between montara and HMB in its entirety could very likely be under water in 90 years if moderate predictions for global warming are valid. Recent statistics quoted in this months Scientific American say that ocean levels will problably be 5 to 10 meters higher than today even if CO2 emmissiions are decreased by 70 percent by 2050. (And how much of HMB is less than 33 feet above sea level???) Maybe the foothill will be necesssary after all. (It is not…

Mike do I have to renew my traffic suffering permit or can I get an automatic extension from the small-minded and self-serving booth on the corner of 92 and main??? Tim

Caltrans will be at HMB City Council tonight

May 16, 2006
Bill, Whenever a project goes to caltrans it is placed into special capsule to that allows its experience of time to slow down. The outside observer experiences time the same way, but as the project approaches the speed of completion, the project obtains its own time scale that cannot be referenced by the outside world. In short, using the CT time scale, 2011 is 2005. I could give you the actual formula for the conversion but my keyboard doesn't have the complete Greek alphabet necessary for representing…

Devil’s Slide will be open in late September, says Caltrans

May 17, 2006
cm, I don't think 2 full lanes with an emergency lane could fit into each tunnel. It makes much more sense to put the old highway to use as the other two lanes. tp

Devil’s Slide will be open in late September, says Caltrans

May 15, 2006
Are you crazy or is it the voices in my head telling me that???? This whole slide thing is a conspiracy by caltrans to repair the road so that it can be used as two lanes of a freeway from pacifica. The tunnel is the other two. The makers of nose rings and tattoo ink plan to have montara renamed South Pacifica. Dynamite the slide and save us from the evil!!!!

Caltrans plans to announce schedule Tuesday

Mr.Hoffman, If I am not mistaken, (and I often am) most of the sensitive habitat that will be destroyed consists of an irriggation pond that served a farm below the bridge location. A much larger wetlands habitat is being created as part of the enviromental mitigation measures included in the tunnel project. this new wetlands is going to be the walmart of frog habitat. The Adventures of MR. Toad is fine children's story and I apologize for the attempt at humor. I do respect your idealism and your…

Caltrans plans to announce schedule Tuesday

May 13, 2006
Jeff, There will be more habitat for frogs when the tunnel is done. I visualize you as MR. TOAD in his motor-car out on a pleasure drive. Instead of coming down here on a drive and eatin calimari why don't you drive to hunters point in your lively SF and so a little toxic waste cleanup.

Opinion:  Foothill Bypass, Part III: We can’t afford it

I forgot to mention that one extra hour in traffic with gas at $4 (rounding off for wear and tear) probably make the real cost to me even less.

the 2000.00 would include bike paths. At one hour a day saved for 250 work days this is not unreasonable. My times is worth just a little more than 8.50 an hour. for the rest I would go 3000.00 but no more sports fields. I think our taxes are two low and prop 13 should be abolished.
