Another bill to exempt developer from the law submitted to Assembly

June 11, 2008
Where is the verifiable fact in that statement? I was asking for an example of a CCC statement to the Assembly that is verifiably "not forthright". Do you have an example?

Another bill to exempt developer from the law submitted to Assembly

Steven Hyman wrote on Jun 11 at 10:26am: The CCC was not forthright in front of the State Assembly... Could you elaborate with verifiable facts? I just watched two videos on http://montarafog.com which, back to back, gave a clear example of one person sharing a memory of what another person said really not capturing what that person actually said. Can we find a statement where we can ascertain actual unforthrightness?

Letter: Can anybody at all explain the Montara Water rates?

November 08, 2007
This is similar to how other elements of municipal services are paid for (streets, police, schools, etc...). Here is the question put to the voters of Montara and Moss Beach in 2001: http://smartvoter.org/2001/11/06/ca/sm/meas/V/ "Voters should note that estimated tax rate is based on the assessed value of taxable property on the County's tax rolls, not on the property's market value, which could be more or less than the assessed value." The voters of our community passed the bond with 81% approval,…

Letter: Can anybody at all explain the Montara Water rates?

November 08, 2007
Nick wrote to me that his understanding prior to the Measure V vote was that "a company was going to buy the district from Cal-Am and up my rates by a huge percentage. And that by voting for MSWD to own it, I would benefit greatly." That's correct. At the time, using the best information available, things like the Cal-Am master plan, and representations they were making before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), we estimated (conservatively) what this would do to costs. We also estimated…

Letter: Can anybody at all explain the Montara Water rates?

November 08, 2007
Yes, I did offer to sit down with Nick. I, too, work over the hill, and I'm willing to make the time. Nick's email raised quite a number of issues (more than just asking for an explanation of the two charges), and face to face is often a great way to cover a lot of ground quickly. It takes time, but it's worth it for matters this important to the community. Just this week, in a discussion with a neighbor about the bond payments at the Moss Beach post office, I asked, "Do you know how your sewer service…

Letter: Sign stealing

November 06, 2007
Oh, I know that some "selective culling" has happened to candidates' signs. It happened to some of mine in the front yards of some of my supporters. It's unfortunate, but it happens. I encourage everyone to join me in leaving signs alone during a campaign. I'm glad to see Neil encouraging the recycling of purloined signs. That's a positive approach to an unfortunate situation. For what it's worth, Caltrans did a rather thorough sweep of signs along Hwy 1 on Friday. Some campaigns had their signs…

Letter: Sign stealing

November 06, 2007
Caltrans regularly removes signs along the Hwy 1 right of way. There's a letter in the candidate handbook that says they will, and they certainly do. You can reclaim your signs from Caltrans at their corporation yard.

Coastside PAC’s endorse candidates

November 05, 2007
I brought a few of the documents we have worked so hard on to the MCC Candidate night. It's true, there was not much time to go into them in any depth; the format imposed on candidates provided little time for that. But we did more than just wave those documents around. Anyone can watch what we actually did at https://coastsider.com/index.php/site/news/video_mwsd_candidates_debate/ You can see the extensive work that goes into some of those documents by looking at this one: http://mwsd.montara.org/Montara_DEIR_10_2005.pdf…

Wednesday Candidates’ night: MCC, MWSD, Pt Montara fire

October 13, 2007
A great big "thank you!" to the two intrepid camera operators who covered the meeting Wednesday night, one from Montara Fog (http://montarafog.com) and the other from MCTV (http://mctv.com). They quietly worked for several hours, tracking speakers, noting times in their logs, changing tapes, and more. Both of these folks regularly perform quiet acts of public service, and the audience at home rarely is aware of the time and energy they put into taping meetings (much less the editing and production…

Opinion: SamTrans sneaks bus route onto Montara neighborhood streets

July 06, 2007
Some of this route is on unpaved streets. Anyone know whether they've made any plans to address the street conditions? I asked a SAMTRANS driver, of all the places he drove for SAMTRANS, which community had the worst streets. He paused, grinned, and said, "Here." A few moments later he added, "and East Palo Alto."

MWSD considering rate increase

January 27, 2007
This new thing about treating rate increases as a Prop 218 matter requiring the mailing and opportunity for protest is brand new for us, and MWSD is one of the first agencies to acknowledge and step up to the new requirements imposed by the CA Supreme Court. The requirements are written into Prop 218; it's not a creation of your local board. Previously, water and sewer rates were explicitly not included the Prop 218 tax increase requirements, so all rate adjustments have been done at board meetings,…

MWSD considering rate increase

January 27, 2007
Carl asked, "What about one of my main questions: will the expanded water facilities paid for by the rate increase allow permits for additional development--residential, commercial, or both--to be issued?" Short answer: the improvements are to address deficiencies of the system for the current users. The system, even with the new well we're getting permitted, will still be at deficit for the needs of the current users. The increased storage gives us short-term supply during brief outages, pump maintenance,…
