Cunha returns to old schedule, cancels buses

September 12, 2006
I agree that we are letting our kids, and our community down by not providing buses for our kids. What many may not understand is the trickle down effect this situation has on our low-income families on the coast. Not only does the lack of a comprehensive school bus program add to existing traffic problems on the coast, but the burden and cost of transportation hits especially hard on our low income population. Families making on average $14,000/year are paying to send their children on public transportation,…

I rarely comment, but must share a funny moment. Barry and I were leaving the site and wondered why we were moving so sloooowly. Right in front of us was the answer. A Cal Trans vehicle carrying a huge load of rebar that covered both sides of the road, was leading the pack, moving along at a whopping 2mph. Nice timing indeed.

Un Dia Sin Immigrantes (A Day Without Immigrants)

One recommendation I can make to everyone who is interested in this topic is to reach out personally to someone in our local immigrant population and open a dialog. I can tell you that my first six months with this organization have been an eye-opener for me as I was personally touched by stories of abject poverty, starvation, and government oppression suffered by people I "know" on the coast, but sadly, never really knew. A 20-minute conversation over coffee will give you more usable information…

Un Dia Sin Immigrantes (A Day Without Immigrants)

As someone who works, every day, with the immigrant population, I'd like to offer some educational links on this topic. While it is not my job to decide the legal issues, I do take seriously the issue of educating the community about the facts vs. the myths that are circulating. The Coastside Opportunity Center just filed taxes for over 300 low-income individuals, many of them from the immigrant community, so I can personally attest to that myth being untrue here on the coast. I am touched and blessed…

PART TWO - MYTH vs. FACT Myth: IMMIGRANTS DONT WANT TO LEARN ENGLISH OR BECOME AMERICANS FACT: Within ten years of arrival, more than 75% of immigrants speak English well; moreover, demand for English classes at the adult level far exceeds supply. Greater than 33% of immigrants are naturalized citizens; given increased immigration in the 1990s, this figure will rise as more legal permanent residents become eligible for naturalization in the coming years. The number of immigrants naturalizing spiked…

Accident on Hwy 92 muddies impact of HMB’s emergency traffic measures

April 05, 2006
We have a community transportation group made up of the Mayor (Marina Frasier), the CUSD, (John Bayless, John Mosley and Dwight Wilson) the County (Rich Gordon and Staff) and Sam Trans, as well as myself (I run the Coastside Opportunity Center) and our board, and are looking into ways to ease the transportation issues of the coast both short term and long term. I know that the school is meeting about solutions and the city counsel has taken the steps that Barry outlined earlier. Transportation of…

Accident on Hwy 92 muddies impact of HMB’s emergency traffic measures

It took me an hour and 1/2 leaving Montara at 8:15 to get to HMB. The barricades that the city put up southbound on the right hand side at the frontage road (casa del mar area?) had been pushed to the side of the entrance and half the cars were using it to jump ahead of the jam. My office overlooks Hwy. 1 in El Granada and the back-ups continued until about 11:00.

Some Coastsiders get to make larger political contributions than others

November 07, 2005
I have an EXCELLENT suggestion for all those "surplus" election funds - How about donating them to the Coastside Opportunity Center (www.coastside.org)? From what I understand, one of your options is a " Donation to a bona fide charitable, educational, civic, religious, or similar tax-exempt, non-profit organization, provided no substantial part of the proceeds will have a material financial effect on the candidate, on any member of the candidate¹s immediate family (spouse and children under age…
