School Board candidates square off Monday, Oct 30

October 31, 2006
I have questions that were not answered last night: Jolanda's lawsuit threat cost the district $10,000,000 (according to the Professsional Advice Committee’s escalation estimates). What other costs were there? Has this board successfully terminated the contract with Ocean Colony Partners or is it a future legal problem hanging over future boards? How much has the lack of competitive bids for the middle school construction project cost the district? How much has the 8 year period declining enrollment…

Coastsider endorses Pam Fisher for CUSD board

October 31, 2006
Ken, maybe it was the offer by the wealthy donor to fund the lawsuit that encouraged the current CUSD board to 'stay the course' in not collaborating with the neighbors, thus necessitating the lawsuit by the neigbors. Calling it "Pam's lawsuit" mischaracterizes the case. There were 11 other individuals party to this suit. It would be more accuratte if you used all 12 names; perhaps in alphabetical order. Kathryn

I recommend reader take the timer to watch the video of the AAUW forum on Coastsider: Pam Fisher does a fine job of presenting her qualifications. Kathryn

And the only reason there was a conflict between the homeowners and the field users was because the field was enlarged without public notice or permits through the arrogance of the board you are supporting. Put the blame where it belongs. On arrogant policy decisions by the current board... in this case to avoid public notice requirements. What else has this current board ignored? Declining enrollment, teachers, parents, Brown Act requirements, test scores to name a few. Kathryn

Coastsider endorses Pam Fisher for CUSD board

Sonja, you make it sound like Pam was the only one objecting to CUSD keeping the neighborhood in the dark about the proposed lights (not the ones we see from the highway, but a second set directly adjacent to the neighborhood. It appears to me that you have chosen to take a personal attack on Pam instead of looking at the larger issue of the board policy of how CUSD communicates with folks affected by its actions. I had heard that about 80 of the 120 or so households had signed a petition or been…

HMB fire board responds to union critics

October 27, 2006
For full disclosure, Ed Hawkins is the a representative of the union local currently representing the HMB firefighters. His is the union that will loose union dues if we contract with CDF. Kathryn

Interesting all the commentary about who has sued the school district. Perhaps the May 17, 2003 Brandt-Hawley Law Group letter from Jolanda Schreurs should be made public, along with the analysis by Gerry Laster pointing out the lawsuit threat by Jolanda was based on a false premise. She threatened to sue CUSD if Cunha was not built at Wavecrest. Does Jolanda Schreurs still stand behind that letter? How much have construction costs increased due to the delays caused by that letter? Why hasn't CUSD…

Opinion: County Supervisors push their buildout vision on Coastside residents

October 17, 2006
If you want to watch the Board of Supervisors meetings you can over a Real One player: http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/smc/department/home/0,,1864_26222_223131,00.html It is important to note that the buildout number that will be approved today is 37% higher than the number currently in the LCP. However, it simply reflects current County practices. Not only has there been no carrying capacity analysis, there has been no analysis of the effects of a 37% increase in population on the quality of life here…

Opinion: County Supervisors push their buildout vision on Coastside residents

October 14, 2006
The are positive recommendations and negative recommendatoins, I can't say any are neutral. I few point tonight, more to follow: I am dismayed at the buildout rate given neither water district can meet the peak day demand at buildout. A slower growth rate would allow more time for both district to find water supplies to meet the buildout peak day demand. The same slower growth rate would allow the school district to meet the increaded demand at buildout. The 52 unit cap on residential building permits…

Rock concert to stop Pacifica’s Measure L will be held Oct 6

September 26, 2006
I would recommend everyone from HMB and north who suffers with a.m. traffic in Pacifica send money to help this true grassroots campaign, even if yiu cannot attend. This Peebles project t will make our a.m. & p.m. commutes take even longer and be even more unpleasant. Imagine 3000 + additional car trips a day - clogging an already congested corridor. There is not good community based reason to add residential to a zoning that is already commercial. Pacifica needs the ongoing, long term sales tax…

Coastside farmers are still selling local spinach

September 25, 2006
I have stopped at Berta's to purchase wonderful produce for years. It is a worthy stop. Encouraging locally grown produce should be a priority of the County as well as the community. Perhaps the eco-tourism program the HMB Chamber has been working on for the last several years will help to promote the much needed attention this deserves. Kathryn

HMB City Council video: not exactly live, but pretty darn fast

This is terrific. Great job Darin and Barry. I look forward to more videos. Kathryn

Opinion:  Tell the county about pumpkin patch traffic on Hwy 92 before Wednesday

August 21, 2006
Brian, Thanks for posting this. I encourage everyone who is affected by the traffic on Hwy 92 during the pumpkin season to get in touch with Camille on Tuesday. This permit will not be renewed for quite a while. This is your opportunity. Offer solutions. We have many creative folks here. My suggestion is a little more specific than Brians: have uniformed police or sheriffs officers, paid for by the 2 establishments, control both pedestrian and auto traffic from 3 to 6 on weekdays and from 10 to 6…

Video: Fire districts vote on contracting out services

August 19, 2006
Darin and Barry, Thanks for making this clip available. i was not able to stay to the end and the final decision. I think the point made by the directors were good: yes, there is a lot of work to get done but it is time to stop studying it & start getting it done. I think all the directors have put a lot of time, energy and thought into this decison. I thank them all for their dedication. My evaluation of the bids left me thinking there was only one choice if the boards truly wanted to meet their…

Opinion: Thursday’s fire board meeting is critical

August 16, 2006
Carl, I think you are asking important questions. Here is what info I have gathered from the meetings I have attended. The contract for service is being acted on before the consolidation happens. CDF did make proposals to PMFPD that can be updated to contract only with PMFPD. CDF will discuss a contract for a 1 year term. So yes, an independent service contract with CDF can be signed by either one or both boards. CSM wants an 8 to 10 year term. CSM wants a consolidation as part of its contract. (CDF…

Opinion: Thursday’s fire board meeting is critical

August 16, 2006
The agenda for tomorrow night has been revised to add looking at other alternatives after a motion for a service contract has been made. Who is fooling around with agenda this time? Any guesses on what's up? Revised AGENDA 1. OPEN SESSION 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ROLL CALL Half Moon Bay: President Donovan, Vice-President Burke, Secretary Silva, Director Eufusia, Director Lees Pt. Montara: President MacKimmie, Vice-President Riddell, Secretary-Treasurer McShane 4. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS 5. OPEN SESSION…

Interim HMB Fire Chief Vern Hamilton has resigned

August 10, 2006
Last night Robert Olsen, the consolidation consultant for both HMBFD and PMFPD, and Acting Fire Chief Cole spoke and answered questions about the service contract and consolidation. It will be broadcast on MCTV tonight (Thursday). In short: The both fire districts are solidly behind consolidation - Robert Olsen tells us why the federal & state regulatory climate make consolidation the best option for the emergency & fire services here. Mr. Olsen said his firm will be advising the two boards on the…

One restaurant’s door closes, another one opens

August 11, 2006
A closer Hawaiian restaurant is in the Linda Mar Center in Pacifica; It is tucked in next to Starbucks. WE had an excellent dinner at Chez Shea last night. I recommend it. The prices were reasonable, the food was excellent. Kathryn

CGF offers tour of Coastside farms

July 13, 2006
I had lunch today in Putah Creek Cafe in Winters (north of Vacaville a few miles) On the menu was a logo indicating they use local produce. I hope local restaurants will work with local growers and fishermen- food and flowers - and promote our coastal bounty. Kathryn

Grand jury says Coastside fire districts should merge and outsource services

July 13, 2006
LAFCo and the Grand Jury have arrived at pretty much the same conclusion: Merge the districts and contract for services. Currently the discussions between the 2 boards on how to consolidate are ongoing. One point already agreed to by the 2 boards is to retain all current members and to appoint 1 more for a total of 9 members in the first joint fire protection district board. I am concerned that this will result in longer meetings with less being done by the board placing more decisions in control…
