McClung leads Ferreira by 13 votes, McKimmie leads King by 2; results still incomplete

November 19, 2005
David Tom, manager of elections, said last night that they hope to be done by this afternoon. According to Tom, approximately 2000 ballots remained to be counted. That was mostly provisional ballots, but some number of absentee ballots that had to be remade.

The Review's Open Line is a great example of a bad idea. On the surface, it seems to offer a voice to those who don't like to write letters, or who might feel uncomfortable saying something if their name had to be attached. But is the result worth the actual consequences? Over the course of the past several years, I have urged a number of the editors to consider modifying the process to add some accountability and temperance. While I've heard a number of good-sounding reasons from those editors in…

Only 8 votes separate Ferreira and McClung; one vote separates King and McKimmie

Caltrans repeatedly removed signs from the Caltrans right of way, from Half Moon Bay to Montara. Caltrans is not supposed to remove signs when candidates have properly assumed responsibility for their signs. Grady, Ferreira, and Skinner had done so, so the removal of their signs by Caltrans was improper. Voice of the Coast witnessed a Caltrans crew removing signs that were outside of the Caltrans right of way. While the crew lead did note that, "We're just doing what we're told," most of the crew's…

As I understand it, the city was preparing the documents for release, and the Cypress Cove folks filed a lawsuit. At that point, the city could not proceed with the release of the documents because the Cypress Cove association leadership had made the documents a matter of litigation. The time it took to get to the release of the documents was the result of the filing of the lawsuit and the wending of the lawsuit's way through the court's necessary processes. Since the city had been preparing the…

Some Coastsiders get to make larger political contributions than others

Mr. Ginna, You wrote: ...candidates pay LCP for “articles” or “ads” using other people’s money... (full text above in your posting) Your charge is scurrilous, and your sly defense of your charge is thin. Candidates paid for their ads. Their payments were clearly indicated in their ads (with a couple of exceptions due to layout errors, both corrected in the very next edition). Candidates certainly did not pay for articles. It doesn't surprise me to see you attacking Voice of the Coast, but…

Why didn’t the Review endorse Jim Harvey for MWSD?

November 03, 2005
This week's Review published several letters having to do with the election. This seems to violate their long-standing policy to publish no campaign-related letters in the final issue before the election. The rationale has been that allowing last-minute letters would allow no time for correction or rebuttal. Two of the letters were in support of Jim Harvey, correcting the Review's misrepresentation of Jim's status as an elected official. The Review stated he was appointed, when, in fact, he was elected…

There are certainly "big developers". Any developer doing a PUD qualifies, for example. Ailanto. Beechwood. Wavecrest. To name a few. But the continued use of the misnomer "no growthers" appears to be nothing more than oft-repeated disparagement of the elected officials who respect the Coastal Act (the law). One might wonder who could actually be against the Coastal Act. Elected officials up and down the coast have been doing clear and identifiable things to improve sewer, water, roads, drainage,…

Is "no growth" the right term? Who are these "no growthers" you speak of? If you mean the people supported by the LCP, does that bear out? The League for Coastside Protection has supported a majority of the people on the city council, Granada Sanitary, and Montara Water & Sanitary in recent campaigns. In Half Moon Bay, the city council-appointed planning commission continues to process and approve building applications. The city council has been improving the sewer system, the roads, the parks. In…

bginna, thanks for reading Voice of the Coast. For those who haven't seen it, it often includes material from Coastsider, for which we're very appreciative. We invite your comments and letters, and if you have information or story ideas to share, we encourage you to do so. As to "No More Delays", it looks like their key supporters have been at the heart of the decision making for the middle school all these years. "No More Delays" claims: "City council caused delays have cost the school district…

Voice of the Coast's web site has had a clear indication of its provenance since day one. Check out the upper-right-hand corner: News for people who love the Coastside. A publication of the San Mateo County League for Coastside Protection. http://voiceofthecoast.com In addition, the very first articles published, both in the paper, and on the web site, spelled out who we were and why we chose to publish. The most specific: http://voiceofthecoast.com/2005/09/why_voice_of_the_coast.html Sincerely,…
