$2 million grant to help Pescadero investigate new sewer system

October 09, 2006
It's good to see a Southcoast article here on Coastsider. Perhaps it will encourage people from that area to enter into discussion. So far it looks like it's only generated Mr. Woren's comment pertaining to the Midcoast! I wonder who applied for the grant? As I understand it, this money doesn't just fall from above...someone must have applied to the State Water Resources Quality Control Board in order for it to be awarded. Did the county do it or was it initiated locally? Discussion of the application…

I am glad the event was successful in spite of that formidible gate and fierce guard. How did the people manage to get in? --> :)

What does Nimby really mean?

October 06, 2006
Barry Parr said: "It’s offensive and just plain bad manners to label a person in a way that they find insulting." I hope this was supposed to be humorous...? But I have a hunch Barry is being serious. And I agree that one should not label a person in a way that they will find insulting. Let's not carry political correctness to the extreme, though. Some folks seem to be offended by just about anything! How is one to know in advance that seemingly accurate words should not be used to describe that…

Ray Olsen says
And the fact is that the definition is not clear.
That holds true with a lot of words that come into discussion here on coastsider: Environmentalist Developer Wetland Farming No growth Invasive species Endangered species Conservative Liberal Park Highway Road I could go on and on and on. As long as we don't have the same definitions or can see the difference in the perception others have of words like this, we certainly aren't going to be able to come to any agreement!…

Is Coastsider Orwellian?

October 04, 2006
Darin, I don't think you are one of the canaries that Mr. Gossett has written about--though I certainly can't speak for him. The pictures of Mr Canary that have been circulating via email are not you--i've seen you doing your much appreciated (not being sarcastic, either!) video thing at public meetings. If Mr. Canary is such a good citizen, why is he hiding his face in the pictures as the camera-wielding-in-self-defense farmer approaches him? Mr. C (not his real initial) certainly doesn't appear…

Letter: Smart Growth and the Coastside

September 25, 2006
Sorry folks, I've been away on a fact finding mission or I would have insinuated myself into this topic sooner. (Miss me, anyone? I did visit some interesting places that are dealing with growth (obviously I wasn't in the Great Plains area that Carl mentioned in his Sept 19, 12:04 AM posting). On the subject at hand, I found this online:

Quarry developer’s PR company may be “astroturfing” Pacifica mailing list

August 30, 2006
I have a question about the email list. The link in the article takes you to a Google Groups list (Pacifica-L), which must be the one the article refers to. Under the links on the left of the page we are on at this moment (if you are reading this at coastsider.com) is: Coastsider Guide> Coastside Media (see it at https://coastsider.com/more/37_0_1_0_M/ ) is a link to another email list called Pacifica-L. This one is at san.mateo.org. Is this the same as the other one or is it out-of-date information?…

Opinion: Now is the time to write CDF about YMCA’s La Honda logging plan

August 25, 2006
Barry Parr writes:
No one makes more source documents available to Coastsiders than I do.
And we thank you for that, Barry! And also for giving us the opportunity to respond with all sorts of other points of view! If anyone remains uninformed it's because they didn't bother to download and read the documents.
In the real world, we have to rely on people we trust to keep an eye on our government, and help us understand the process. To say that you can’t have an opinion if you…

Opinion: Now is the time to write CDF about YMCA’s La Honda logging plan

Barry Parr wrote:
I don’t have an easy way to tell the count. Besides, it’s a technical and legal document that we’re not necessarily going to be understand fully without context.
So are you saying that we should just do as the Sierra Club and Committee for Green Foothills suggest because they do have the expertise to understand these technical documents in their correct context? I do not see how anyone could, with good conscience, comment on the logging plan without at least…

Opinion: Now is the time to write CDF about YMCA’s La Honda logging plan

August 24, 2006
I'm curious about the "stewardship" that is mentioned as an alternative to logging. What do folks have in mind? In fact, who are these people? In discussing stewardship, one needs a definition of the word. And, as with other terms which we've attempted to define here, I don't think we'll reach a consensus on the definition. Barry, do you have a count on downloads of the logging plan from Coastsider? It would be interesting to know how many were curious enough to download it. Not that it would be…

Letter: YMCA applies to log 733 acres in La Honda

August 12, 2006
Rather than the posting of the phone and fax numbers for Camp Jones Gulch (so readers could "Tell them what you think") Coastsider readers would be better served by links to more information about the logging plan. Has it been through the county yet? In that case, "CDF's only public meeting" while possibly true, is just a "sky is falling" statement. The County of San Mateo has many restrictions of its own that might go farther in protecting the area than CDF's restrictions, if any. I think we need…

Environmentalists didn’t kill Measure S

July 31, 2006
Sam Carrieri's comments about the night riders and smugglers brings back those old days. Anyone remember Alice Mattei's Pescadero column? "Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Silva of San Jose were in town on Saturday visiting friends." Marian Miramontes also had a column. Who would have thought that a trip to pick up a case of motor oil would get your name in the paper! (Those who don't "get it" haven't lived here long enough!) And regarding Ken Johnson's July 30 5:35 PM comment about Mary A's letter to the editor...well!…

Ken Johnson wrote: "I still don’t know who “They” are." You probably didn't get a chance to read Dan Blick's Jul 29, 06 | 12:41 comment. He tells us. It's up there ^ someplace. Read it yourself, I ain't a gonna put words in his mouth. This may become confusing, what with multiple Marys. I'll be Mary B and Mary A can be Mary A. How cool is that? (I'm a little jealous of her becoming Mary the coastsider.com humor queen, though.) I don't want to put words in Mary A's mouth but...you guys are a…

Environmentalists didn’t kill Measure S

July 28, 2006
Barry Parr and Ken Johnson say that "The label doesn't matter" (Barry) and "Labels don't tell all!" (Ken). I agree! Labels tend to classify us into a narrow niche. So I wonder what all this flap is about Measure S and Environmental Voters. Is that a label? Mary Ascher's "strident" (Barry) letter to the local print paper did not mention environmentalists. She mentioned a "small, but vocal, group of self-appointed arbiters of community values". Heck, from any perspective that could be "the other side".…

Maybe we need a definition of environmentalist? We may be speaking of apples and oranges even when using that term! A google of define:environmentalist gives us: A person who places high values on the environment. www.timberlineforestry.com/html/technical_definitions.html someone who works to protect the environment from destruction or pollution http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn Environmentalist is a term used to describe an advocate of environmentalism. NY Times finds the tacos of its dreams in Pescadero

July 26, 2006
Well, it just goes to show... I don't think of it as the "taqueria at the gas station"--quite the reverse. (Yes, it's been a gas station longer but food just naturally sticks in my mind.) And no sign? I was certain the article had it wrong. I just knew there was a huge sign there. But I was by there yesterday and...there is no sign.
