CPR invites you to “Rock with Local Bands”

Kevin Lansing wrote:
would be very interested in hearing CPR’s views regarding the Peninsula Aeromodelers case, which is currently the subject of an HMB enforcement case (see links below).
The CPR directorship (of which I am a member) has not agendized, researched and formed a position on the model airplane issue. Maybe it will at a future meeting. Your statement that prescriptive easements are "a kind of private-sector derivitive of eminent domain" is interesting. If you have written…

CPR invites you to “Rock with Local Bands”

I want to thank Barry and Coastsider for mentioning the fundraiser. You can see some of the Silent Auction items at http://www.c4pr.org/events (and even come back here and make fun of them if you want). I wonder if Dan Blick knows anything about what's involved. From his comments, he seems to have some preconceived notion about Californians for Property Rights. Perhaps he knows something about the group that I don't?

5,500 Coastsiders ask Trader Joe’s to open store

The following is all in good fun and along the apples-to-apples --er-- branch: Signatures won't have to be verified by county elections. No "decline to sign" folks asking people to withdraw their signatures. Piece of cake. (preferably organic apple)

San Mateo County flunks growth management in new report

July 07, 2006
Mr. Bogner writes:
I hope that you can address these issues and explain your motivations.
Huh? How did the topic of Smart Growth morph into CCF and "Muteff not a moderate" anyway? As far as who is a moderate--if one hangs out with the extreme on one side or the other, one's idea of what is moderate will be grossly out of touch with what the mainstream thinks of as moderate. In fact, to these people the mainstream can appear to be the extreme. My reflection on the Kelo decision was…

San Mateo County flunks growth management in new report

Folks, do you live in a snout house? If you live in HMB perhaps you live in a snout house on a substandard lot! (Just checking to see of you've downloaded and read the Bay Area Smart Growth Scorecard. If you live in HMB, chances are you do live in a snout house.) I have a few suggestions for further reading. Visit Smart Growth America For a different view, download this pdf file I am also worried about how the Kelo decision might be a nice companion to Smart Growth. See this article I am only suggesting…

San Mateo County flunks growth management in new report

June 30, 2006
I urge all readers to educate themselves about the term Smart Growth. What does it mean? Who says? Is it something you personally support? How can you say for certain if you don't know what it is? San Mateo County is scoring 0% on a benchmarch set by Smart Growth proponants. To understand what that means, you must first know what Smart Growth considers "good" and "bad" and why. Remember it's all relative!

County stops, and then allows, filling and grading at Big Wave

For those who do not know them (or even if you do) here's a link to an artilce about Iacopi Farms: http://www.ferryplazafarmersmarket.com/markets/farmers/farm_50.php

County stops, and then allows, filling and grading at Big Wave

Ms Ketcham writes:
Importation of soil and changing the grade of a site is not “routine agricultural activity”.
Well, I won't argue, since you have the degree. However, I have seen "land planes" used in the Salinas Valley, leveling the fields to prepare for planting an irrigated crop. The following link is to an article titled Land Grading for Irrigation: Design and Construction http://muextension.missouri.edu/explore/agguides/agengin/g01641.htm (From University of Missouri,…

County stops, and then allows, filling and grading at Big Wave

To Steve Skinner: What would you classify as "farm equipment"? A horse and plow? As for the buildings in the picture (or did I misunderstand you...) I thought this was about filling and grading. I must pay closer attention. I didn't realize that the buildings had sprouted overnight! :) Lisa--great to know you have that farming background. Sorry if I came off sounding...however it sounded. I hope you are doing well here on the coastside, though I can't imagine why on earth anyone would move here to…

County stops, and then allows, filling and grading at Big Wave

So I suppose, even if a farmer has the proper permits, certain folks are still hoping to eliminate farming on the coast. If the farmer involved is the one I know personally, he is in fact one of the few young full time farmers left on the coast. I wonder if Ms Ketchem is experienced in farming or has a degree in agriculture? Or is her experience from daily observation? She is observant, since most likely it isn't about growing pumpkins (too late in the season). I'd guess peas. I said somewhere else…

City will add agriculture to Boys and Girls Club lease

Recently I came across a pamphlet on the SM County website titled Guide to Creek & Wetland Project Permitting. It's available for download from the SM Co documents page: http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/smc/department/home/0,,5557771_9420293_12313326,00.html Or the direct link to the pdf file is: http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/vgn/images/portal/cit_609/10147807crk&wet.pdf You'll find very helpful information in this little publication, even if all you get out of it is "wow, what a convoluted process!"…

City will add agriculture to Boys and Girls Club lease

Good to see you giving us updates on this Barry. To your comment that
City hall staff is continuing to investigate whether changing the use of the land to agriculture would require a coastal development permit.
Jimmy Benjamin's Jun 20, 06, 2:20 am, comment in a related article https://coastsider.com/comments/1568_0_1_0_C/ suggests to me that a permit would be required because the intensity of the land use has changed. In the above referenced comment Mr. Benjamin said
When a…

Thank you very much Carl May for insight into the principles you've used to guide your thinking. The great thing about Coastsider is that people can give deliberate, well thought out answers.

Boys and Girls Club bulldozes probable wetlands on city’s land without a permit

June 22, 2006
Carl, (or anyone) I am curious (I'm doing some research on wetlands). If, as you say, "one cannot construct a natural wetland" what are we to say about a wetland that develops where man might have had a hand in it? Say, by disturbing the earth or diverting a stream (or ditch) or building an agricultural pond? Can that ever be a natural wetland? If the land around here has been intensively farmed as in the past, can a damp area regenerate into a natrual wetland? Is there some criteria for what has…

Boys and Girls Club bulldozes probable wetlands on city’s land without a permit

June 22, 2006
(continued from previous comment) Okay, back to Yamagiwa. I believe that the decision finds that the above number 3 "certain type of soil" is not required for the site to be considered a wetland. It just needs to be saturated (wet) part of the year and support the types of plants that grow in that situation. Using the "soil type" definition made it easier to point to a site in the dry season and state that it was indeed a wetland. Now it just has to be proven to support wetland plants during its…

Boys and Girls Club bulldozes probable wetlands on city’s land without a permit

I've been mulling over a statement made by Jimmy Benjamin above on Jun 20, 06 at 11:53 am. He wrote:
I chose my house because it does have a legally recognized and protected wetland (a stream) flowing on it. I would be thrilled to find endangered species living there, and try to nurture them with a supportive habitat. I think that some gardeners would consider this one of the very highest forms of gardening. I hope this helps distinguish Yawagiwa from the backyard gardener, and gives the latter…

June 20, 2006
Sorry the link to the Yamagiwa document didn't work in my previous comment. I'll try again. It appears to be right here at coastsider.com. (I found it with a google search.) https://coastsider.com/images/uploads/planning/beachwood/yamagiwadecision.pdf I do not expect anyone to wade through it. That would be cruel and unusual punishment. However, if anyone is up for a challenge...! I believe the findings set a precedent that will be used for years to come. I am not an attorney and can hardly wade…

Boys and Girls Club bulldozes probable wetlands on city’s land without a permit

June 20, 2006
Thank you for your response, Jimmy. Your comments should be required reading for all residents of the coastside. However, I am a little concerned about your statement that folks don't really have to worry about wetlands in their gardens. That may be true today, but what about in the future? Things change. Just ask anyone who applied for a remodel permit and found their home had somehow been built on a substandard lot. Things change. Laws change. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with them. Yes, I know,…

Boys and Girls Club bulldozes probable wetlands on city’s land without a permit

June 19, 2006
I am curious about the history of this piece of ground. Has it ever been farmed? If so, how long ago? If it were farmed today would a permit have to be granted? Is the field mowed to keep it fire safe? If so, does that need a permit? And also, if it has been mowed in the past, what damage has likely been done to the possible wetlands? What catagory might the probable wetland fall under--wet meadow, seasonal wetland, coastal swale or potential wetland (which exist as part of the 2004 city draft General…

I did a double take on Saturday when I passed that sign. And had a good chuckle. Of course, I don't commute on Hwy 1, so please forgive my levity. I was wondering why I hadn't seen it on Coastsider. And here it is! Thanks Darin!
