Letter: “Tip a Cop” benefits Special olympics, Wednesday

May 28, 2009
I have never been to this event. What exactly is it? Cops are the waiters? Is that it? Nothing ever tells you what the event actually is... Well, besides this "The event will run from 5 to 9pm. There will be great food, balloons, family fun, handouts for the kids, police displays and a fantastic silent auction." But what is the event?

Opinion: SamTrans sneaks bus route onto Montara neighborhood streets

July 06, 2007
I personally wouldn't mind but I don't have a bus stop in my front yard. Just a FYI that they also did an article in the paper as well as an insert (sheet of paper). I think that was about two weeks ago. Let's just say I was aware of it and I am usually the last to know. :-) Stephanie

What’s wrong with downtown Half Moon Bay?

March 16, 2007
Wow, this is an interesting thread. I think this is almost identical to the one posted a year ago about survey results. A few comments: - Completely agree about the quality of the stores. There are a few stores I shop at, that are local, but I will not shop at the "gallery" or the "gift shop" because I have no need. This begs the question, what do we locals need that we don't have now? - Is there any way to post a survey within the coastsider? Just have a bulleted list of some possible stores and…

Red Ginger opens in El Granada

BTW, Red Ginger is officially closed. They closed their doors 1/16. I never tried them but was looking forward to giving it a try today.... Give them a call and they have a nice message about the closure.

Coastsiders working to save local coffee and chai shop from replacement by chain

Pedestrian bridge? Why walk? I would want more of a people mover... Who wants to really move between dining at this establishments? :-) And yes, your silliness is appreciated.

Thanks Barry! I had no idea. Good to hear that the chicken is good, since we will probably be smelling it every day. :-)

Coastsiders working to save local coffee and chai shop from replacement by chain

February 01, 2007
I have to say this because it is marketing 101 - if his goal is to create an area that is more "consumer-friendly and tourist-friendly", why Popeyes chicken? My gut tells me, tourists won't come to half moon bay for Popeyes. I HAVE witnessed people driving from San Jose and San Francisco for a Chai. Are they going to integrate the Popeyes into the gas station? Meaning, is it going to be a stand alone store or just something inside the gas station? Isn't Popeyes a discount brand? I only have seen…

What about getting rid of that horrible looking liquor store, or the discount clothes shop or the run down Straw Hat Pizza? If they are looking to bring upscale businesses to that area, why not focus on the businesses that are bringing the place down, rather than the place people really enjoy and brings a sense of community to the area? I don't get it.

Snapfish is great but it requires a log-in to view photos. Shutterfly and Kodak Easy Share Gallery let's you view and share photos for free and does not require you to register to view photos. Oh, and I should say I work at Shutterfly. I have used snapfish and have purchased a few of their products but it still bothers me that they require a log in to view shared photos. Sorry, just had to share. (pun intended) :-) Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Letter: Sign and distribute a petition to Trader Joe’s

June 28, 2006
John - Thanks for getting a list together. Are petitions in the store or are there only tables outside (during certain hours) at these locations?

Letter: Sign and distribute a petition to Trader Joe’s

June 26, 2006
Thanks Mandy & Michelle for letting me know where I can sign. I was just at Oceanshore and had no idea that the petition was there. I will check next time I stop by. Thanks!

Does this mean the petition is done? I haven't seen it and did not have an opportunity to sign. Did my opportunity pass?

Letter: Sign and distribute a petition to Trader Joe’s

I never thought a conversation about a Trader Joe's would get so heated. It is just a smaller chain store (the actual store is nothing like the size of Target, Home Depot or Wal*Mart) A few may disagree, but I don't think the coastside suffered when McDonald's, Safeway, Albertsons, Thrifty, Longs, Starbucks and Baskin Robbins came to the coast. Heck, we are SWAPPING Albertsons with a Trader Joe's. I personally would rather see TJ's than Albertsons. I really like Franks store and don't mind paying…

Albertsons closing in HMB

June 07, 2006
Agreed. Anything we can put in here that LOCAL people can purchase, would succeed. We are so darn focused on "tourist" money that we forget that LOCAL's have more than enough dollars to spend. I would LOVE to spend hundreds of dollars a week/month on products/services on the coast side but there are only a few stores on the coast that meets my needs. Anybody that can capture my need at a REASONABLE price (I am not paying $20 for a hamburger), has my business. This is a market craving local businesses.…

Is there any way to get a list of the vendors? I am interested in learning more but I could not make this event. Is there a list out there?

Un Dia Sin Immigrantes (A Day Without Immigrants)

May 04, 2006
This has caught my interest. Is there any data out there to explain why people do not do not come into the country legally? I am sure most people are nice and doing it for their families, but why not go through legal channels? I will claim some ignorance here – and I am sure I am not the only one. In the end, the issue is not about immigrants, it is about illegal immigration. Understanding why people feel so compelled to do this illegally, rather than legally, would help us understand the importance…

Letter: Comcast Cable TV quality problems?

May 04, 2006
Yes, we have Comcast and we have the same problems. We have noticed quality issues for months now.

Media examine Coastside life without Devil’s Slide

April 27, 2006
This sounds very difficult and feel for the businesss. At the same time, how can businesses get creative to get more sales? Is it lowering prices a bit to drive more local sales? Is it a local event to get people into their stores? It is difficult when local businesses are so dependent on tourism. Maybe switching gears to appeal to us locals would help. I have money to spend, and I would love to spend it locally, there just are very few stores out there that appeal to me or are in my price range.

Accident on Hwy 92 muddies impact of HMB’s emergency traffic measures

April 05, 2006
A huge kudos to the city for adding barriers to the areas people use to "sneak around" traffic. Specifically the south bound area after Frenchman's Creek. It is rude and inconsiderate when people use that area to avoid the traffic other fellow coastsiders are patiently (sort of) sitting through. By doing this, these rude people are adding to the commute time of those waiting because they need to merge with traffic.

Opinion: Downtown in a downturn

March 17, 2006
Traffic really isn't the point. I live locally and would easily travel to downtown for shopping or for places to eat. Why don't I? The current stores do not have anything I want and the food is overpriced! The store that takes my needs into consideration and does not kill me on price will get my business - even if it takes an extra five minutes to get there because of a light (heck, beats the 20 minutes it will take me to go over the hill).
