Another bill to exempt developer from the law submitted to Assembly

June 11, 2008
Steve, You've referred to the "liars of the Coastal Commission", and it's fair to ask you to cite a specific lie. Or "mis-speak" now you've gotten all PC on us. Just one lie. How hard can that be?

Opinion: CUSD board loads, aims at foot, prepares to pull trigger

June 05, 2008
Back in 1995-96, the year of the immortal Facilities Master Plan, the district's facilities were getting crowded. Now, after a dozen straight years of enrollment decline, overcrowding is the last thing the district needs to worry about. Development fees, large or small, can't be used for operating expenses, and operating expenses are the districts current—and perennial—problem. Under what circumstances would it make sense for the school board to endorse 1991? I can think of only two.…

I don't think that knowing where Half Moon Bay is need be a prerequisite for caring about the undermining of the Coastal Act.

Actually, Kevin Baron, I don't know many academics "denying man's actual effect on climate change," so I probably won't forward it. Nor do I know any academics whose job depends on their views on climate change, one way or the other.

SHyman: "And BTW, its insulting to refer to people who buy and sell real estate on the Coast as MARKS. Several of the posters who share your views here are my clients/friends and I can’t imagine they would take kindly to your poor choice of words." Steve, have you told a client in 2008 that now is a good time to buy? Just curious.

SHyman: "ts a sad commentary about doing business on the Coast that people feel the need to get permit consultants and attorneys to try and get things accomplished in a reasonable time period. The permit process for both the County and City have gotten out of hand and the process has become abusive, expensive and takes too long. Its critical for large projects to hire these consultants. Unfortunately, the little person who just wants to build their dream house doesn’t have the resources to…

Opinion: Review’s coverage of AB 1991 is biased and incomplete

Hyman: "I think the Milk and Wildlife people were mentioned because it shows the efforts taken to kill the bill by people who have nothing to do with it or don’t live anywhere near HMB. These comments do more harm than good because everybody knows they were put up to it." "Put up to it"? What on God's green earth might that mean? That California citizens (who overwhelmingly passed the Coastal Initiative) don't have a legitimate interest in the development or preservation of the coast? 1991…

Coastal Commission takes on AB1991

April 19, 2008
I'm reminded of a letter that the Review ran some years back, after the golf course at the south end of town was finished. The author was grateful for the new landscaping--what an improvement, she gushed, over the "barren coastside" that it replaced. Sadly, the letter does not appear to be online. Deliver us, O Steve and Chop, from the weeds and the barren coastside. Give us our pavement, grotesque houses, and gas stations. Amen.

HMB to Sacramento: If you don’t support AB1991, we’ll kill this dog

April 17, 2008
"Let’s put it another way. HMB didn’t even have the option of not abiding by the Coastal Commission, and an LCP, did they?" "Abiding by the Coastal Commission"? Presumably you mean "abiding by state law, as required by the citizens of California through a ballot initiative that passed overwhelmingly", right? I see that TG is trying to claim, indirectly, that the Coastal Act is unconstitutional. I think that claim's been put to bed; let's not waste time on it.

Letter: An oft-misdiagnosed disease that can be prevented

April 06, 2008
The CDC has information here: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/shingles/vac-faqs.htm ...and there's lots more on the web. The vaccine is approved for people 60 and over, and it sounds like the cost is around $150-200. There's coverage under Medicare Part D (the drug benefit) but it varies from plan to plan. I'm not 60 quite yet, but I think I'll put it on my calendar for my 60th birthday. Thanks, June, for the heads up.

Lawrence Lessig may run for Tom Lantos’s seat

February 26, 2008
Carl, I'm not following you. I know you can't be arguing that Lessig is forcing artists to use Creative Commons; obviously he can't. So...he's confusing them? That's the problem?

Supervisor Gordon suggests MCC has “outlived its usefulness”

January 29, 2008
On representation: There are 350,000 registered voters in San Mateo County. 16,000, or less than 5%, live on the coastside, from Montara to Pescadero, of which 7300, about 2%, live on the Midcoast, from Montara to El Granada. Another way of looking at it: Midcoaster voters are less that 1/4 of the 31,000 voters living in unincorporated SMC, who in turn are less than 9% of the county. While supes nominally represent one of five districts, they're elected at large, so the fact that the coastside is…

Snarky but true. If it wasn't for bad newspapers, we wouldn't have (had) no newspapers at all.

You're not going to find a TV antenna for 1900 MHz, but 850 is close to the top of the UHF TV band (tops out at 806). Here's another approach: http://search.solidsignal.com/?q=Cell+Phone+Signal+Booster&I1.x=15&I1.y=12&site=com&new_search=1

Join Darin Boville for Comet Viewing tonight on Montara Beach

January 14, 2007
We saw McNaught Saturday evening in the post-sunset hazy glare, down here at Lobitos Creek. It was a bright smudge with the naked eye, and the tail was distinctly visible with binoculars. I'm trying to visualize the comet's geometry. How is it that it's visible both before sunrise and after sunset, and how does it manage to be visible only from the southern hemisphere after perihelion?

Riemer, Wilson, Schreurs elected to CUSD; Pacifica’s Measure L defeated

November 10, 2006
The California Department of Education has made it pretty clear to local districts that it's not going to enforce the consequences of districts not meeting NCLB goals. There are well over 100 schools in CA that are now subject to Year 5 Program Improvement, and essentially none of them are implementing the prescribed NCLB corrective measures. That's not all bad; the corrective measures don't make a whole lot of sense. But it does mean that local districts have received a clear message that NCLB has…

Q: Why are Coastside school board elections so vicious?  A: Because the stakes are so small.

It'd be one thing if the smears Barry talks about were made in open forums, where the candidate being attacked can respond. But of course they're not. They're circulated in closed email lists, by anonymous flier, by whispering campaign, making them impossible to answer. I predict, though, that the main reaction to Barry's piece will be assertions that our schools are doing great, and his is an unfair attack on our dedicated teachers and staff. But of course it's no such thing, and our schools are…
