Ask Comcast for reasonable Basic Cable service

May 23, 2011
Dropped Comcast years ago. Are they supporting HD yet?

Blood drive at Coastside Farmers’ Market, Saturday

May 21, 2011
A great way to spend a Saturday morning. Double red cell appointment for me. Just plug into some good music, sit back, and bleed.

Mike: Very cool time-lapse. A few technical questions: Where was the camera positioned? (on a boat mast?) What camera/software did you use? David P.S. We were colleagues at Netscape / AOL many years ago! I was with the Calendar divlet.

Field Notes: Coastside Farmers Market

June 06, 2010
Writing for atonement. I cheated on the Coastside Farmer's Market. This past Saturday, the wife and I trekked all the way to Saratoga to their Farmer's Market. In the past, we found the broad selection of vendors, sunny skies, and perhaps most importantly, Brentwood White Corn, justified the long drive. But not anymore! Having been to the Coastside Farmer's Market last weekend for the Blood Drive, we found the thriving and growing Market to be just delightful. It had nearly everything we crave during…

Play Montara’s “Guess the number of Power Outages” this week.

January 18, 2010
Power just came back on for us in the hills of Montara. Out from 11:00 AM to about 2:30 PM. Going to be a long week.

CUSD’S “Push Poll” for a Parcel Tax

November 19, 2009
I was also a poll participant. It was pretty obvious after the first few questions that they were trying to frame ballot wording. That notwithstanding, as a research device it was far too long and I found my attention drifting from the tediously long questions and shifting answer selections. If I were evaluating the data, I'd be very wary of drawing any hard conclusions because the survey instrument was so flawed.

New Peruvian Restaurant in Montara

October 15, 2009
Looks like the early reviews on Yelp are quite favorable towards the food (service kinks - not so much.) Fortunately those types of problems can be ironed out with a little time and attention. Will be trying it out soon.

La Costanera, nearly there

August 29, 2009
The new flag that is flying in front of the restaurant looks like a plain, white flag. The print is not bold enough to be visible when you're driving by at 50 MPH. I'd consider reprinting the flag with a stylized version of the identify system. Looking forward to trying out the restaurant when it opens.

Letter: Coastside Farmers Market field notes

May 18, 2009
Visited the HMB Farmer's Market this Saturday and was delighted to see it has grown since the last time we went a couple of years ago. Back in the Cetrella parking lot, the market was a tiny affair with barely a dozen tables. The weather this past Saturday could not have been more perfect. The summer fruits (apricots in particular) are juuust starting to arrive. The coming weeks should be even better!

Comcast says it will upgrade HMB’s cable

December 28, 2006
I wonder if the upgrade also includes HD (High-Definition) programming and better Local Station (KGO, KPIX, KTVU, etc.) reception? I also wonder how long AT&T will take to extend U-Verse services to the Coastside to offer a viable, non-satellite alternative to Comcast.

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!

November 07, 2006
I voted today using the new electronic voting machines. The instructions provided by Nancy were clear so that everyone should feel comfortable giving the machine a try. I had a pretty good experience with the interface. All that you had to do was operate a dial to change the highlight on your candidate or ballot choices and then press the "enter" key. Best of all, there was a paper record that you can review before the final submission of your ballot. I don't know if there's an advantage to this…

Letter:  Why hasn’t anything been done about the evening commute?

July 15, 2006
Whether the Tunnel is a good idea or not is a topic for another thread -- and a moot point. We are still faced with a steadily degrading evening commute and a morning one that has somehow reverted back to a form that preceeded Memorial Day. One recurring suggestion is to block left & right turns onto Main Street and allow traffic to flow through the intersection to Highway 1. If indeed the Merchants of Main Street are the ones that are objecting to changes like this to the traffic pattern, they should…

Letter:  Why hasn’t anything been done about the evening commute?

July 12, 2006
Something must have changed this week to effect the morning commute. Even if you discount last week as a light, holiday week, in the two weeks preceding the 4th of July, the morning commute was fine. Is it the weather? This week there has been heavy fog on the coast and up on Skyline and 92. Has Summer Session started at CSM or in HMB Schools? Or was there a change in levels of police presence - keeping everyone honest at the key intersections? I left Montara at 8:00 am this morning and was surprised…

Highway 92 travel times are now online

May 24, 2006
This information is far, far more helpful in determining the level of traffic, than the CalTrans webcam at 92 and 1. Further, an El Grenada to HMB travel time status would also be very helpful.

Letter: Comcast Cable TV quality problems?

May 04, 2006
Picture quality for the local stations, in particular, 3, 4, and 5, has degraded. Ever since NBC transferred to San Jose, channel 3 has been nearly unwatchable. More recently, the snowy picture quality has taken over channel 5. In the past, Coastside Cable/Comcast cited that they are receiving these local signals over the air and then piping them into the cable. I'm interested in knowing if anyone with DirecTV has experienced any problems with local station picture quality?

Caltrans puts Hwy 1 & 92 intersection camera online

April 28, 2006
Submitted to CalTrans Comment Form: Regarding web cam at HWY 92 and 1. Commuting from Montara to San Francisco. Thanks for installing the Web Cam, however, I think I would get a better indication of the morning backup South on HWY 1 if one was installed at the Frenchman's Creek light. Of late, this is the real source of the backup as the traffic moves well once South of the light. And on the return commute, a web cam at the top of 92 and Skyline, facing 92 West down the Valley would provide a good…
