Coastal Commission alerts HMB to problems with Foothill Bypass

June 09, 2006
The alternative traffic solution proposed by Don Bacon and Coastside Community First at the May 2 City Council meeting does not envision nor think it is neccessary to route through or fill in a wetland. This was inaccuractely characterized in the Times article. The delineation posted on the Ailanto agreement provides valid routing options. The question is " Should a route be situated that can be in compliance with the 100 foot buffer zones as stipulated for wetlands be considered as a viable option…

Opinion:  Foothill Bypass, Part II: A legal (and literal) quagmire

May 09, 2006
In my opinion, "Infrastructure" is not a new buzzword, but an important component of public services. Speaking from my opinion and perspective only, I respectfully disagree with Mike's conclusions, but there are some aspects which sound reasonable. For instance, "..Bayview/Foothill will not solve our traffic problems." Probably not. But that(or a similar solution) would go a long way to help. The legal challenges to which are referred could result in "refunds and damages" and a legal "taking" opinion…

SamTrans “Operation Sea Otter” to provide buses for this school year

March 18, 2006
I would like to commend Cheri Parr and her "Coastside companion of presense" Zoe Kersteen-Tucker for their dedicated work with SamTrans and the Coastside Opportunity Center to help bring thia issue center stage, and come up with a great near-term solution. The work has just begun however, and I know the CUSD board is behind these efforts and that it will truly take a collabrative effort to be successful in this. Thank you Cheri, from all of us Coastsiders! Charlie

Applicants sought for middle school design committee

March 03, 2006
We had a good turnout last night. It is very encouraging to see the community unite over any issue, particularly one that is so important to our legacy. Currently we have the committee comprised of myself, and Roy Salume from the Board.Dr. Bayless, Mike Andrews (Cunha principal), and Jim Tjogas (maintenance) will serve as adjuncts. The remainder of the committee will be filled with a certificated (teacher) and classified (administrative), and three (3) appointed community representatives. Currently…

Johnathan, I'm writing this from a $30 million dollar "facilities planning school" from which I have been in attendance for over 30 years. Perhaps your philosophy training clouds your perception of reality. Your whole argument for reduced number of students falls apart on the premise you have the money to build an elementary school. We don't. Nor do we have the money to build two middle schools, much less the administration to run them. I'm certain you will insist on having the last word, so when…

John, Start at the beginning. Your "proposal" does not take into account Measure K Funds cannot be used to build an elementary school.Even if you claim to find a "Bond attorney" that would interpret something different than that what was explicitly voted for (that being a new middle school). That would only bog down the process by insuring litigation procedures against the District similar to what most likely would have happened by your support of the failed Measure D. I go back to my original questions,…

To Claire on English Language Learners: I think we as a Board and teachers collaborate to emphasise the individualism to "meet the needs" (my priority item#1) of our ELL students. We recognize that all parents, from any cultural or socio-economic background want their child to receive an education that will prepare them to make it in our world today. Individualized testing can help identify students who need additional work, and after school time should be made available for "catch-up". Also of importance…

Mr Lansing and all: I apologize for the seemingly untimely responses to this on-line forum. As I explained to Barry Parr, my time is limited in this campaign season, and I would try and address this site on at least a weekly basis. I have been expressing my positions and vision in the various public forums held recently, and my website enumerates answers to most, if all of your preceeding questions, with the possible exception to enrollment. Mr. Lundell states in his latest ad in the Half Moon Bay…

I will be happy to answer that at the Teacher's forum on the 18th, as written I believe the question to be based on false suppositions. Back to work...

To Barry: 1) I currently manage a budget of $30 million dollars on a lump-sum (hard dollar) public works project. Although the makeup of overhead, plant and equipment, and facilities are of different proportions to the CUSD budget, it is similar in the fact that there are no additional revenue streams that are perpetual. We have to make do with what we have, brainstorm innovations to save and best utilize resources, and solicit input from knowledgeable sources. I also participate in long term strategic…

Unfortunatly your suggestion does not take into account Measure K is for a new middle school, not a new elementary school. That is why I was asking where the money comes from.

JLundell: You say,"Building a new elementary school and restoring Cunha will be less expensive...That should leave funds for upgrading the other elementary sites." Once again, funds from where? As far as your statement regarding riparian buffer zones at Wavecrest, what is your experience with mitigation plans?

CUSD candidates’ forum: Jonathan Lundell

October 10, 2004
JLundell: You float the notion of building a new elementary school (perhaps at Wavecrest to make it more approvable) and the at some point in the future, build a new middle school on the "Midcoast". Where do you propose to get the money to fund this new initiative? Secondly, with the riparian buffer zones already planned into the Wavecrest site, how does it become more approvable? Third, where do propose siting this new middle school that will be affordable with current Measure K funds, and do you…
