While I will agree that riprap does hurt the beach no matter where it is placed sometimes it is a necessary evil, I am sure it is not a needed item at this location. Just look at the current harbor protection structures or the large number of jetties on the east coat. I am neither for or against this person having riprap if it was done legally they had every right to do it, and don’t deserve to be bashed. The people who let them put it there are the ones who need the education. The most amusing…

Letter: Smart Growth and the Coastside

September 19, 2006
Kevin, So your answer to the above statement "Yes that’s true, but as Ken King points out, these outcomes are usually the result of political forces overcoming the sound planning principles set forth in the Coastal Act. This is what happened in the case of the Monster Mall project now under construction in Princeton and in numerous other ill-conceived Coast side projects that have made tons of money for a select few. " Is yep its broke but lets not do anything to at least try and fix it? That seems…

Devil’s Slide is open!

August 29, 2006
I apologize for my poor grammar and spelling in my last post, Barry was kind enough to exclude a response scolding me for my errors. After I said “I can think for myself" it kind of makes you wonder :) guess I should refrain from posting first thing on a Sunday morning. Anyway Carl I am interested to get a response from you I know I have butted heads with a few of your posts; but I really do respect your devotion to the coast side. I just fail to see an end game in your statements and really would…

Devil’s Slide is open!

Carl, What is your answer to these problems you speak of? You know as well as anyone the population is not going to go backwards here or anywhere else in the world. People live longer year to year more births year to year = more people. Most persons who post here ask questions, seek further information and insight into a subject and give their opinion on how to change or execute an idea. Granted some are motivated by greed or a want to have things "their way" but many just want to make things better…

Devil’s Slide is open!

information for general uniformed public at large (sic) I was once a colorado resident and took interest in the comments about how large this tunnel is vs. two of the Colorado greats "Eisenhower and Hanging Lake here is what I found. Eisenhower tunnel is 40 Ft high and 48 feet wide each bore. information from: http://www.dot.state.co.us/eisenhower/description.asp Hanging lake is 29'9" high by 48 feet wide each bore information from: http://www.informs-cs.org/wsc05papers/183.pdf the devils slide proposed…

Devil’s Slide to reopen August 4

August 01, 2006
John, I could not agree more; any situation can be looked at from the side lines and be judged poorly. It has been sad to see here on "Coastsider" just how many people have a bad word to say about anything and anyone. I am all for constructive criticism but out and out bashing of a concept idea or person is not needed. Granted my statement above was not in the best light by any standard, but calling the local population uniformed boobs, the local government manipulative and Caltrans liars just really…

Devil’s Slide to reopen August 4

July 30, 2006
Carl, If this whole ordeal was handled so badly please take them to court I would have liked the slide opened earlier or never closed at all. Wait a minute take mother nature to court for having it rain too much then sub litigate caltrans as a conspirator to the slide and get us all of our tax dollars back. If any lawyer is willing to take the case I will put some money up for the legal fund. -Matt

Letter: Sign and distribute a petition to Trader Joe’s

June 20, 2006
Mary, I didn't say I had an answer to the problem at hand just some observations as a new resident. I have done business at three of these stands and will do more. I enjoy the fresh foods and supporting someone other than big brother as much as anyone. I just wanted to give a perspective from someone who is and at the same time is not a "local". I think that is what is missed at times by many people, in that not everyone knows what is here and it needs to be broadcast to the visitors of HMB. I have…

Letter: Sign and distribute a petition to Trader Joe’s

June 20, 2006
I am new to HMB as of 1 month ago and I have to agree on the situation on Main Street being a mess.. Living close to main street and currently not working I walk it almost daily for a reason to get out of the house and I see very little of the coat reflected in the store or the products they offer. Everywhere you look its Mediterranean & Spanish themed fascias, the art ugh don’t get me started with sculpted nudes and modern contemporary pieces. If HMB is going to preserve it's self it needs to…

CCF asks Coastal Commission 25 questions

July 14, 2006
Leonard, In response to your’ comments to Ray and myself you stated: In my business, when someone says “I need you to do ‘x’”, I always ask “What is your bottom line need?” I then look for the best solution to provide that need, which isn’t necessarily the “x” in the original request. You’re saying you want more lanes. I’m saying that you really want to increase the capacity and service level. Why not first consider other methods of increasing the capacity and service level,…

CCF asks Coastal Commission 25 questions

July 12, 2006
Thank you to Kevin, Mary, John & Ken on getting some facts and details on the table for myself and others to ponder. On that note after reading all of the data it looks like if the time to act has not past the coastside may have some very good points to fight the BOS and or the citizens vote not to widen 92. I say this in that you can fight both or be for both but not allow them to have it one way or the other. In that if they are going to force the expansin down our gullets they better well fix…

CCF asks Coastal Commission 25 questions

July 10, 2006
The following comment was posted by ken king on Jul 10, 06 | 12:13 pm The bottom line though is 92 remains a 2-lane road even after the slated improvements by the County. So there is nothing we on the coastside can do about this at all, except be wary about any proposal that will add substantially to our existing traffic. That’s just one of the reasons that Foothill is such a terrible idea. Ken, First I would like to say I am not sure Foothill is a terrible idea but trying to ride it on the back…

CCF asks Coastal Commission 25 questions

July 10, 2006
I have several questions to ask to anyone willing to answer and who has some facts to back up their statements I am not for or against the new road plans at this time and the semantics of weather it is a road a super highway or a 2 mile long driveway basin are moot in my eyes. Before I get to them I think it would be a good thing for everyone to review some communities on the California coast that are thriving I was lucky enough this weekend to drive down to San Diego and I drove US-1 as much as…
