POST appoints two new directors

September 27, 2007
Congratulations to Audrey Rust and to P.O.S.T. once again; outstanding additions to the board of an outstanding organization.

Letter: Amazing raptor display at Wavecrest now

September 14, 2007
This afternoon at 4:00 there was a small herd of deer (7) grazing in the mowed portion of Wavecrest about 200 yards from the highway.

I'd like to express my appreciation to Audrey Rust of P.O.S.T. for giving assurances to the City of Half Moon Bay that the ballfields already in Wavecrest will have a more secure future status than they now have, and for expressing a willingness to look into the possibility of a soccer field being constructed there in the future. Both are generous gestures to the Coastside community. For some reason, there are some folks that don't seem to want to recognize that generosity but, then, this is the…

To Frank's question: The ballfields have been there for enough years that they are considered "grandfathered." That being said, state and federal agencies have identified several issues in the immediate surrounding area that would make it very difficult to have any additional or expanded fields in that part of Wavecrest. But, again, the ones that are there get to stay there.

Audrey Rust, Bruce Russell, and their organizations set themselves a mighty task and somehow are accomplishing it. They richly deserve our admiration and gratitude, and I would hope that we accord them ongoing recognition for what they're doing for our community. This puts a close to a long and stressful development chapter in the City's history and opens a whole new one with a much more positive conservation potential for our future Coastside generations. Mike

Coastsiders working to save local coffee and chai shop from replacement by chain

As funny as all of the above is, I don’t understand why we've digressed from discussions about the Raman's/Shami/Peet's problem. Contrary to earlier postings, the issue is NOT on the City Council agenda for the coming Tuesday, 2/07/07, according to the City's website as of 5:00PM, Friday. What now? Mike

More than $4 million raised so far for Coastside Adult Community Center

Hal, your statement - - "the Ailanto settlement, which commits Ailanto to paying for exactly that traffic light as a condition of building all but 40 of the houses in Pacific Ridge"- - is probably based on an erroneous statement in the Executive Summary of the Draft EIR for the Widening/Signalization permit. The Agreement actually requires that no (zero) Certificates of Occupancy will be issued until either the widening/signalization is installed or until one year has passed after Ailanto has given…

Not only Coastsiders but future generations of all Californians, as well, should be grateful for the vision, determination, and generosity of Audrey Rust, her associates, and her donors.

Who says EIRs aren't amusing? The executive summary claims there's a "wetland" in the median between the highway and the frontage road. Oh, really? I looked at the map in the appendix and, sure enough, there's a thin strip of blue hugging the full length of the frontage road on its eastern side all the way up to Kehoe! Those of you who are paying close attention to such things will now recognize what this EIR is calling a "wetland". It's the nice new CCWD 16" replacement pipeline that was the source…

Come help Coastsider clean Highway 1 in Montara Saturday

November 18, 2006
Thanks, Barry, for organizing and directing this. You had enough volunteers to clean up both sides of the highway - not just your adopted side - and we did so. That was a lot of stuff we removed from the environment. Felt good.

Suppose we gather at the MWSD parking area (just South of the lighthouse on the West side of Hwy #1) around 11:00 A.M. and dispatch crews from there? Mike

Highway 92 project takes its first steps tonight

October 26, 2006
The City Council, Public Works Directors, the traffic engineers, Caltrans, CCAG, and the Transportation Authority have been making it clear for years that the traffic benefits from the Main & 92 project are primarily in the Westbound direction and for local circulation, i.e. Main Street. The double left turn lanes from southbound #1 onto #92 will give the commuters from the North a little better shake during heavy traffic but, practically speaking, at the expense of commuters coming from the South.…

Supervisors vote to allow no more housing on Burnham Strip

My preceding remarks were written while the two prior comments were in the moderator's queue so I'll modify my opening sentence to eliminate the word "Steve's..." Mike

Riprap does armor the bluff it's placed against but diverts force to the nearest unarmored bluff and also messes up sand migration which can leave bluff areas with less sand to absorb wave shock. If someone put riprap in place before the Coastal Commission took its stand against it, or if someone has an actual permit for it, then it's highly unlikely that the riprap will ever be removed because it's much, much more expensive to remove than it is/was to install it. But if someone wants to process…

Supervisors vote to allow no more housing on Burnham Strip

Putting Steve’s overwrought word choices to the side I’d like to say that whenever I've had dealings with SAMCAR’s staff personnel I've found them to be professional and focused. Yes, they work for a Board of Realtors and, yes, they do work to publicly support the growth positions that one would expect from a realtors' organization but they also do a lot more. And I've always observed them to be doing it with a sense of professional decorum. That deportment made it easier to…

Weekend travel times approach an hour on Hwy 92

October 11, 2006
The City is now starting the $21 millior Main & 92 project. The SMCTA is working on the next project between that and the base of the hill. The last number given a few years ago was "$30 million and climbing fast" so $50 million might be where it's at by now. Where the SMCTA is at this time in terms of permits, accumulated money and likely schedule is something you might get by giving them a call.

Ocean Colony art show will support beautification of Hwy 1 medians

October 08, 2006
I attended the Art Show at Ocean Colony this afternoon. There were a lot of folks in attendance and an abundance of art & artists. I enjoyed the work of Hans Arum whose landscapes and streetscapes are mostly local and recognizeable. And good. His prints were very reasonably priced, as well. The local artist who surprised me the most with her talent was Eda Cook. I've seen some of her work before but she must have been stashing her best stuff for a show like this. I went over to talk to her about…

On an item in which it's announced that people are giving generously of their time and talent for a cause which they believe to be for the benefit of the community as a whole - that is just not the place for discussing whether a pre Coastal Act subdivision was appropriate or not.. Let's take it elsewhere. Mike

Ocean Colony art show will support beautification of Hwy 1 medians

October 06, 2006
I enjoy the banter about Ocean Colony as much as anyone but I'd prefer to see it on a different string because it detracts from the sincere effort of some of our talented citizens to contribute something to the community at large. Art appreciation is not my natural thing but I plan to go to this event because I'd like to see what what talented locals are willing to effectively donate to the general good.

Letter: Smart Growth and the Coastside

Leonard, your refutation of Terry's assumption is well researched and would be overwhelming if only your first sentence didn't state "it’s obvious that you know nothing about running a sanitary district". That's an absolutist statement that Mr. Gossett can easily refute by showing knowledge of something, anything, regarding sanitary districts. Your argument - and the tenor of this discussion - would have been much better served by the statement "You do not appear to have based your assumption…
