We have a tree that is growing far too close to our house and have been told it is a fire hazard and needs to be removed.  I have two questions - 1) Are there any ordinances regarding tree removal on personal property?  2) Anyone have a good tree removal company to recommend?

The following was sent to me via email with permission to re:post here in Town Hall:

Cheri - The county requires a permit for all “heritage” trees (certain types of trees) and all “significant” trees (that are more than 38 inches in diameter as measured at 4 1/2 feet from the ground).

These rules only apply to people who live in the unincorporated midcoast and fall under the County’s rules.  Different rules may apply to people who live in the City of Half Moon Bay.

Many thanks - you know who you are!

38 inches in circumference, not diameter
