Menu Foods, an Ontario-based company that produces pet food, is
recalling dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40
brands, including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.  An unknown number of cats
and dogs have suffered kidney failure, and about 10 died after eating
the affected food, the company said.

Some of these contaminated products have made their way to the
Coastside.  As a precaution, you might want to check the list of
recalled pet food which is available from THE MENU FOODS website.  A
complete list along with product codes, descriptions and production
dates is available from Menu Foods at:

http://www.menufoods.com/recall

The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners can call
for information:

866-463-6738 and 866-895-2708.  Callers are keeping the lines very busy.

Further reports say that the rat poison was in wheat imported China.  It was said that the practice is to put the rat poison in the fields.

I think this makes the argument for county-of-origin on all food products - it could just as easily have been in foods human consumption.  Another strong reason to buy locally produced ag products.
