Barry, thanks for setting this up.

It’ll be interesting to compare Coastsider’s unmoderated Town Hall forums with the Review’s moderated Talkabout forums.

Requiring users to put their real names on their profiles is the main thing I’m doing to ensure reasonable behavior here. The other is to make users ask for access to posting on Town Hall. it’s my only defense against spam and it acts as a reminder that they’re supposed to behave responsibly.

Normally rational people sometimes go a little crazy when they’re posting online.

I’ve been thinking lately that it would be a good idea for nominally “anonymous” forums to put posters’ IP addresses on their posts. It wouldn’t make anyone explicity identifiable, but would make it a lot more difficult to adopt multiple identities in a forum.
