I received an email from a friend who said that there is a proposal to allow some fishing to occur withing the FMP boundaries. There’s an online petition set up to write in opposition to this. Does anyone know if this is true?

So what’s going on right now is an intense lobby for your participation in various campaign methods (letters to Blue Ribbon Task Force reps, or petitions), depending on the Proposal you choose to support for California’s Marine Protection Areas.  Next week is the meeting, this weekend is the time to get your attention.

You can read each Proposal here.

If I may say, please do read each Proposal before responding to any petition solicitation.  Many other groups would like people to please consider Proposal 1-3.

Also, please know that some of those petition sites are free petition creation sites and once you register your info, then you get SPAM and Phish’d.

Here’s a bit of a blurb from Surfrider’s email today:
“Next week, the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force will be recommending a network of Marine Protected Areas for the North Central Coast .  We need your help to make sure coastal recreators’ voices are heard in support of strong protections for underwater habitats and ocean life.

As you may know, California is developing a statewide network of marine protected areas to protect special places along our coast and help species recover.  The process was successfully completed on the central coast last year. Now three proposals developed by local stakeholders are being considered for the North Central Coast , which extends from San Mateo County to Mendocino County . Surfrider Foundation is supporting Proposal One-Three as the “balanced proposal”—it is a strong network of marine protected areas with strong protection for our special places and has broad cross-interest support.

The decision meeting will be taking place on April 22-23 in San Rafael , with public comment taking place on the afternoon of April 22 (Earth Day) after agenda item #6.  If you can attend, either for the whole day or just a few hours, it will have a big impact. If you only have a small window of time, consider keeping posted on the meeting’s progress via the live online webcast http://www.cal-span.org/Broadcast/MLPA.asx . If you would like to submit written comment before, or in lieu of, the meeting, check out our online action alert below.

Meeting location:
Embassy Suites Hotel
101 McInnis Parkway
San Rafael, CA 94903.
The meeting on April 22 begins at 9:30.”
