Singing Circle on the Coastside?

Letter

In other places I have lived they had Singing Circles—groups of adults who get together once a month to sing together casually, sort of like an indoor campfire. I see there are some up in the City, but haven’t been able to find any out here on the Coastside. I was wondering if there would be any interest here in starting one. I’d be glad to host, at least initially—I can fit about 20 people at a stretch.

Here’s how it works. The group meets once a month, usually on a Friday or Saturday evening, say 6:30 - 9. Anyone is welcome, and there are no dues or fees, though often it does involve bringing a potluck dish to share. Some bring a guitar, harmonica, or other acoustic accompaniment instrument, others just their voices. There’s usually a piano present.

We go around the circle. When it’s your turn you can choose to lead a song (that others are likely to know or pick up quickly), perform a song, or pass (for those who prefer just to join in the singing).

That’s it. Nothing fancy, but often a lovely way to pass an evening and get to know other Coastsiders. What do you think? If you are interested, please add a comment to this letter. If there seems to be enough interest, I’ll post again with a date and time for a first try.
