Question: Who owns the strip of land at Pillar Pt. marked on this map as “San Mateo County Harbor Dist.” and the land below that to Maverick’s beach? The Harbor District’s jurisdiction ends at the “average tide line” so it doesn’t extend up to the cliff below the Air Force Base. San Mateo County Parks is only the marsh. Does the Air Force own this land? I have always wondered why the Fitzgerald Reserve doesn’t loop around and connect up to the marsh. Can anyone explain? Thanks!
Sometime in the recent past there was a proposal to build 3 houses on West Portal overlooking the marsh. Looking at this map, I do not see any privately owned land in the location of this project which seems to be in the area of the boundary between 12 (Vandenberg) and 3 (POST). Does this mean that POST has purchased this property and perhaps we have one less ill conceived development project to worry about?
The 3-house proposal was for the orange jigsaw-puzzle shaped parcel, apparently now owned by POST. The cynics among us say that the 3-house proposal was only to jack up the price and/or coerce an open-space agency into buying it. Looks like that worked.
In response to comment 1 on this article, the Harbor District owns a number of parcels of dry land such as the marked one, and also the land next to the El Granada Post Office running all the way down the inland (“east”) side of Obispo to Coronado. I don’t know about the jurisdictional comment, but government agencies are (unfortunately) not precluded from owning land outside their jurisdiction. I suspect that the Harbor District’s jurisdiction is not limited as stated, otherwise, how would they run the on-shore portion of harbors?
Some time ago I asked Peter Grenell to clarify who owns that land and he responded that the Harbor District’s jurisdiction extends only up to mean high water. I think the question of who owns it remains open.

Maybe I’m missing something here, but when did three houses become “ill-conceived” development? Brings to curiousity what Coastal Planning Utopia looks like for many. Most likely, an indefinite moratorium on building permits on the Coastside with the support of gov’t agencies A-Z. Replete with Dante-like purgatory for real estate agents, developers, aircraft pilots…and all things Big Wave. The latter I think he called L’Inferno di Marea di Grandi.
Kevin, are you familiar with the details of that proposal? Not all are, but some proposals are actually ill-considered. Perhaps one might consider that the previous poster had knowledge from which that opinion was formed.
