Montara resident Shauna Pickett-Gordon majored in piano and voice performance, and teaches both. She has played with many of the great Scottish fiddlers in North America and is the featured pianist in the annual concert of the Scottish Fiddlers of Los Angeles. Her compositions range from classical and Celtic to jazz and world styles.
Colyn Fischer holds degrees in violin performance and music education, performs and teaches classical violin and Celtic fiddle, plays jazz and composes in many genres. He’s just returned from the east coast where he’s been an instructor at a summer fiddle camp. He has twice wond the U.S. Open Scottish Fiddling championship.
Both are co-directors of the Peninsula Scottish Fiddlers and have toured Scotland with the group.
Together Shauna and Colyn are The Peat-Fire Flame playing the classic traditional music of Scotland and “beyond.” The “beyond” refers to their trademark Jazzeltic combining jazz and Celtic genres, improvisations based on traditional melodies and their own compositions.
“This is the first house concert at our new Half Moon Bay location where Lisa Spector had her music school for 14 years,” notes Kitty Rea, director/instructor of Ms. Kitty’s Harmony Road in Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay. “We want to support Bay Area musicians and give local audiences a chance to experience music they might not normally hear in an intimate, ‘listening-room’ environment.” All proceeds from the concert go to the musicians and Ms. Kitty hopes to continue with monthly house concerts featuring music from classical guitar and medieval music to rare modern instruments like the “hang.”
The Sunday August 21st Kids’ Concert is a short, fun event specially designed for kids and their grown-ups. There will be room to shake a leg, bounce to the beat and play along on some kid-sized percussion instruments. Please note: Children must attend with an adult. We’ll sit on the floor but will have some chairs available for those who need them. RSVP in advance for the discounted $5/person tickets. ($8/person the day of the concert.)
The Afternoon Concert is for music lovers who can sit still and listen (even if they’d rather be dancing). If you’ve heard Colyn and Shauna play, you already know how truly amazing they are. If you’ve never seen them perform live, this concert is your chance to be moved by their music. There will be one 20 minute intermission with yummy treats provided for your nibbling pleasure. Plus you’ll have a chance to meet the artists, purchase and get an autograph on any one or all of Shauna and Colyn’s gorgeous CDs. RSVP in advance for the $20/person tickets ($25 the day of the concert).
