You’re invited to a workshop on Pilarcitos Creek.  "Pilarcitos: Restoring Our Watershed" will be the first of three public workshops to develop an integrated watershed management plan to balance the beneficial uses of the Pilarcitos Creek watershed.

The workshop, produced by the Pilarcitos Creek Restoration Workgroup, will be Saturday, October 27, from 10am to 1:30pm at the Coastal Repertory Theater, 1167 Main Street in Half Moon Bay. Refreshments will be provided.

This first workshop will provide an opportunity for public input on the initial assessment of the Pilarcitos Creek watershed and the goals and objectives for the watershed plan.  The second workshop, January 26th, will be to review the draft plan.  The final workshop, next summer, will be to present the final plan.

Coastside Cougar Midgets Bust Bayside Broncos
 
Fantastic fall weather kept the sun shining on the Cougar Midgets as they remain undefeated, beating the Bayside Broncos 27 to 0 at last Sunday’s game. 

Just minutes into the first quarter defensive end Sergio Covarrubias tackled the Bronco’s running back deep on their 4 yard line.  The Cougars took control with less than 16 yards to score.  Quarterback Nate Seaton scored on a sneak and the sure foot of kicker Chewy Huerta Jr. gave the Cougars an early lead of 8-0.  Defender Austin Krieger made a deep tackle on the kickoff, forcing the Broncos 1st down at the 24 yard line. 

The Broncos couldn’t get traction and tried a pass on the 4th down.  The pass was complete except they weren’t expecting the lightning speed tackle of Cougar cornerback Timma Cruz who knocked the ball out of the receivers hands on the tackle, forcing the Broncos to punt it away.  The Cougar Midgets Offense quarterback Nate Seaton, running backs Chewy Huerta Jr. and Blake Kastl, center Dalton James, tight ends Taylor James and Joey Erdie, guards Neal Seaton and Jose Uribe, and tackles Sean McCaffrey, Will Smith, and Matt Young precisely carried out two sweep plays resulting in the second touchdown with the PAT. 

Broncos tried hard but were jammed by the Cougar Defense.  Marshall Egger and Joseph Lowman made very aggressive tackles turning over the ball to the Cougars in just four plays.  With less than a minute left in the first quarter quarterback Joey Erdie got instructions from Offensive Coach Dave Gibbs to do the boot leg.  Erdie hid the ball on this right hip and carried 45 yards to score the third touchdown with the PAT combination bringing the score to Cougars 24, Broncos 0. 

The second quarter was highlighted by some greats blocks by Taylor James, Sean McCaffrey, Patrick Meyers, Austin Krieger and Jacob Spaeth, allowing running backs Joseph Lowman and Irving Segura to make some nice up the middle running plays.  A short pitch by quarterback Nate Seaton to running back Chewy Huerta Jr. gave the Cougars about 15 yards and put the Cougars close, but short. 

The third quarter brought out more great tackles by Palmer Kennedy, Neal Seaton, Manny Arellanes, Jose Uribe, Erik Procopio and Joseph Lowman.  In almost a repeat play of the first quarter, defender Sergio Covarrubias sacked the Bronco quarterback turning over the ball at the 15 yard line.  Joseph Lowman then carried the ball to well within kicking range, making it a breeze for Cougar kicker Chewy Huerta Jr. to kick the ball through the uprights for a final score of 27 to 0.

Interested members of the public are invited to attend a public session at the annual Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council Retreat meeting on Thursday, October 11 at the Stinson Beach Community Center, 32 Belvedere Street, Stinson Beach, California.

Members of the community may attend the first part of the council retreat meeting from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

New council member Marc Gorelnik will be sworn in as Maritime Activities/Recreation Alternate;  Gorelnik is with the Coastside Fishing Club and American Sportsfishing Association.

Professor Jonathan Stern of San Francisco State University will be sworn in as Research Alternate.

At 9:15 a.m. there will be a 15 minute public comment session in which community members may raise various topics before the council and sanctuary management. Depending on the number of people requesting comment time, individual comments may be held to between 2 and 3 minutes.

Anyone wishing to hear an overview of the Gulf of the Sanctuary and its resources, issues and management actions is invited to attend for the 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. session, when Jan Roletto, Research Coordinator for the Farallones sanctuary, will present a Draft Sanctuary Condition Report for the Council’s Review. This report will provide a summary of resources in the Gulf of the Farallones sanctuary, pressures on those resources, the current condition and trends, and management responses to the pressures that threaten the integrity of the marine environment.

The most celebrated Latin flutist today, Dave Valentin was born of Puerto Rican parents in 1952 in New York City. Valentin is also a composer, arranger, and band leader. He won a Grammy nomination in 1985 and the kudos of jazz fans with his selection as the leading jazz flutist by Jazziz magazine readers for seven years running. Dave recorded over 15 albums for GRP, combining the influence of pop, R&B and Brazilian music with Latin jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover jazz. 

Since the mid-2000s, Valentin has been signed to Highnote Records releasing World On A String (in 2005) and Come Fly With Me (in 2006). He has done several collaborations with pianist Bill O’Connel and was a Latin Grammy nominee again in 2006.

In the middle of an election for the Point Montara and Half Moon Bay fire boards, here’s an opportunity to get on the consolidated board without running at all. On October 1, boards have merged to form the Coastside Fire Protection District, and they need appoint an additional member to the board.

The Coastside Fire Protection District includes the city of Half Moon Bay, and the Midcoast communities of El Granada, Moss Beach, Montara, Princeton By The Sea, and surrounding areas. The District is responsible for providing fire protection and emergency medical services within its jurisdiction.

The Coastside Fire Protection District currently has eight directors and needs to add one more.  The appointee will hold office until November 2009, when the ninth position will be eliminated.

The application can be downloaded from Coastsider, are available online at www.hmbfire.org, or may be picked up at the Coastside Fire Protection District Administration Office located at 1191 Main Street in Half Moon Bay.  The deadline for submissions is 5:00pm, October 16.  All applicants must be residents and registered voters in the District. Interviews will be scheduled by the Board after the application process has closed on October 16.

Fencers from the Coastside Academy of Fencing brought home two bronze medals from the Bay Cup Tournaments held over the past two weekends in Rancho Cordova and Carmichael.

Elizabeth Jug, 15 years old from El Granada, placed third in the highly competitive field of the Junior Women’s Sabre to take home a bronze medal. This category included twenty one fencers aged nineteen or younger.  She narrowly lost in the semi-finals to Emily Cheng 13-15.  Emily is an A-rated fencer and national medalist.

Andrew Gleeson, 11 years old from Montara, fought his way to third place in the Youth 12 Mixed Sabre, a field consisting of both girls and boys 12 years and under.

Clarissa Perez, a 12 year old from San Bruno, placed fifth in the same category.  Clarissa was number one seed after the round of pools and Andrew was second seed going into the direct elimination round.

Jeffrey Dalli from First Place Fencing Club, Y-10 gold medalist at the Summer Nationals, won gold in the above event, and Kalan Miurelle from NFC took home the silver.  Nicolette Stoddart from First Place also earned a bronze.

The Bay Cup organizes tournaments for clubs and fencers in the San Francisco Bay Area from as far north as Sonoma, south to San Jose and east as far as Sacramento.  These are the local training grounds for fencers of all ages, including many who compete nationally.
