New Leaf Community Markets Donates 2 Tons of Poultry to Second Harvest

Letter

By on Wed, January 29, 2014

New Leaf and its partner MBA Poultry, the producer of Smart Chicken®, have donated a total of 3.7 tons of poultry to area food banks. 2,850 pounds were donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, 4,040 pounds to Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County, and 530 pounds to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. The 3.7 ton poultry donation is a 12% increase over last year.

This is the second year that New Leaf’s Half Moon Bay and San Jose stores have participated in the Smart Giving program. Through this program, for every ten pounds of air-chilled Smart Chicken purchased by New Leaf customers during November, New Leaf donates one pound of Smart Chicken to a local food bank.

“The 1.4 tons of poultry we are receiving thanks to a partnership with New Leaf and MBA Poultry will go a long way toward helping Second Harvest provide food to the more than 250,000 people we serve each month. Poultry is a great source of protein,” said Kathy Jackson, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

Since 2006, 16.7 tons of Smart Chicken has been donated to area food banks by New Leaf and MBA Poultry, who is dedicated to producing the safest, highest quality, and best tasting fresh chicken in the United States. “New Leaf is very appreciative of MBA Poultry’s generous support of those in need in our community. We are also very grateful to our customers for joining with us to make this annual effort for the food bank such a success,” said Scott Roseman, co-owner, New Leaf Community Markets.
