On Tuesday, County Elections released its last unofficial results before certification of the election. Write-in candidate Laura Stein defeated fourth-place finisher Leonard W. Stone II by 675 votes to 571. in the Thursday, Nov 10, results Stein led Stone by 74 votes.

Volunteers make a difference. Along the San Mateo County coast, trained volunteers play a major role in protecting the Western Snowy Plover—a small shorebird that lays its eggs on the sand at a few California beaches every summer. Volunteers are needed to protect these birds. A training workshop for new volunteers is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2011.

The one-day training workshop for prospective Plover Watch volunteers will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Half Moon Bay State Beach office located at 95 Kelly Avenue, in Half Moon Bay. Volunteers who attend this workshop will be prepared to help with the countywide survey in January. The San Mateo County Resource Conservation District presents another free workshop through the RCD’s Livestock and Land program to provide area equestrian and livestock owners with information about land stewardship. The upcoming workshop will focus managing pasture and paddocks; reducing erosion, mud and dust; and managing and composting manure. In addition to presentations by area experts, attendees will also receive information about free local resources and how to apply for property improvement funding.

The next workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, November 29 from 2:00 to 6:30 pm and will be held at the Pillar Point Ridge Manufactured Homes in Moss Beach. This workshop is free, reservations are required.

He mortgages his house, signs on as a ship’s cook, and makes his way to the USA. In Los Angles Burt buys an old car, builds at rattletrap trailer, and begins a road trip to the salt flats – charming everyone he meets along the way. This video is a record of a public meeting held in El Granada on 5/26/11 featuring a ‘Presentation of Plan Concepts’ for the improvement of roadway and trails on the Coastside Highway 1 corridor from Devil’s Slide Tunnel (south portal) to the Half Moon Bay Airport. This is phase 2 of a study of Highway 1 on the Coastside. Phase 1 of the study (2009) covered Highway 1 from the airport south to Miramar. The study is sponsored by San Mateo County. The goal of the planning process is to improve safety and mobility for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

The 5/26/11 meeting recorded in these videos only presents conceptual or preliminary design proposals. A more developed design proposal is expected to be published in Nov 2011, followed by a public presentation and then submission to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

This weekend Coastside Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts distributed thousands of door hangers announcing their annual Food Drive to benefit Coastside Hope.

The door hangers encourage Coastsiders to donate food next weekend, November 19. Next weekend Scouts will come back through the neighborhoods to collect donations and take them to the food bank where they will be distributed to Coastside residents in need of help. We’re hoping to collect thousands of pounds of food to bless our friends and neighbors in need.

If you received a door hanger it means that a Scout will come back through your neighborhood next weekend. If you can make a donation of food to Coastside Hope please place the donation in a bag in view from the street and we’ll pick it up between 10 and 2 on Saturday. Please help us share a blessing with those who need assistance.

Last year I spent Thanksgiving Day doing maintenance on Moss Beach Park while my wife slaved over a hot stove. As I finished up the work on the park I spent a few moments talking with some kids I know from Farallone View who were playing in the park. I wished them a Happy Thanksgiving and as I was leaving I heard the kids ask their Mom if they would have Thanksgiving food for dinner. No, she replied, there wasn’t enough money this year for special food, the would be having PBJ sandwiches for dinner. It broke my heart to hear. We were fortunate enough to share some of our Thanksgiving with this family and others in the community also pitched in to give them a special Holiday meal. This is such a good place to live.

If you are so blessed as to have enough to eat please share a little with those who are in need. Let’s load those Scouts down with more food than they can carry.
