Are you an artichoke or a turnip?

Find out during Coastal Rep’s production of Artichoke, a warm-hearted portrait of a family finding its way through life, love, and forgiveness.

Set on a farm in Saskatchewan, Artichoke is the turbulent story of Margaret and Walter, estranged for fourteen years after Margaret discovers Walter’s illegitimate child in a laundry basket on the porch. Margaret names the child Lily Agnes and raises her as her own…but Walter is banished to the smokehouse! One summer, Margaret satisfies her need for culture and affection with a visiting professor and, much to the surprise of everyone, opens a door to reconnect her family.

Playwright Joanna M. Glass is a master of characterization, mood and dialogue, and this production spotlights the inability of people to connect with each other, even in the closest circumstances.

This engaging dramatic comedy, populated by colorful, intriguing personalities, is perfectly suited to our community and our intimate theatre setting. Come along on this journey to discover the meaning of forgiveness.

Featuring: Roxane Ashe as Margaret Morley, Will Chen as Gibson McFarland, Rob Hedges as Jake, Don Hughes as Archie, Peter K. Owen as Walter Morley,  Nicole St. John as Lily Agnes, and Paul Smith as Gramps.

Ever since it premiered in England in 1985,the play Les Miserables has touched the hearts of people everywhere. And now, 27 years after its debut, Half Moon Bay High School is honoring the tradition of Les Miserables by preforming the school edition of the famous play.

Les Miserables follows the life of Jean Valjean, played by Thomas Perkins, a former convict who becomes the mayor of a flourishing town after turning over a new leaf thanks to a generous bishop. But when Inspector Javert, played by Alex Ortiz, mistakenly arrests an innocent man under the assumption that he is Valjean, Jean Valjean must decide between preserving the life he has and doing what is right, all while attempting to protect a woman who worked in his factory, Fantine, played by Rhiana Schaver.

The play also tracks the experiences of a revolutionary named Marius, played by Ian Kairos, who falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Cosette, played by Hannah Greenburg, and must choose between being true to his heart or his country. However, Marius is oblivious to the fact that another young woman, Eponine, played by Eva Cassel, also loves him.

For 2½ months, the leads, as well as the rest of the cast and crew, of HMBHS’s Les Miserables worked hard perfecting this amazing play, from making props, to practicing choreography, to rehearsing the numerous songs. It is no question that the students of HMBHS worked with extreme devotion on what has become a source of great pride for everyone who strived to make this production of Les Miserables as good as it could be. And on Friday, March 16th, all this devotion finally comes to fruition with the opening night of the production.

Les Misérables opens Friday, March 16, and runs through Saturday, March 24. You can buy tickets or make a donation online.

The cast of HMB High School’s upcoming production of Les Misérables is holding an open, Sing-A-Long Rehearsal on Sunday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m.

“This special rehearsal is being held in response to calls I got from people in the community who wanted to be involved in the production,” said Jim Ward, the Director. “Les Misérables seems especially timely given the amount of revolution and social unrest in our world right now. I want to give the community of Half Moon Bay this opportunity to come out and get a preview of the show and, like the wonderful Sing-Alongs we have at the holiday season, join with friends, neighbors and the high school cast in singing this wonderful music that so many people know and love.”

March 11 is the eve of the 25th anniversary of the first Broadway opening of Les Misérables. Donations to support production costs will be gratefully accepted.
