This is outrageous. Leland Yee and Gene Mullin should be ashamed of themselves. I feel sorry for anyone who's either trying to maintain their property values, or is trying to sell. Did our enlightened state representatives and HMB City Council even think to require the use of local workers or local contractors for the work? Maybe what comes out of all this is a T-shirt: "My elected representatives sold us out to a developer, and all we got was a lousy bypass." I'm bracing myself for gridlock at 92…

Terry, Sure, there are many bypasses that work. The Main St. and Foothill/Bayview Bypasses *don't* work. They reduce the flow of traffic instead of increasing it. >> I was hoping for, and asking for, more ideas and options from this discussion group. How's this: Don't do something stupid. You're operating under the premise that the Foothill/Bayview Bypass is a net benefit to the Coastside. I'm saying that your premise is idiotic. No amount of lipstick will make that pig look good. -- Dan

Just a quick comment on your #2, Terry: We already have a bypass for the Hwys 1 & 92 bottleneck. It's called "Main Street," and it sure helps traffic, doesn't it? In fact, when the Slide was closed, the Main St. Bypass was coned off to improve the flow of traffic. So I figure that the Foothill/Bayview Bypass will be as 'helpful' as the Main St. Bypass -- with the added bonus of several hundred additional cars! Plus, why would anyone want to increase the supply of housing on the coast at a time when…

First, let me say that 1) yes, the Airport was here before I was, and 2) I love planes and I hope to get my pilot's license someday. That said, the current situation is not just annoying, but unsafe. Probably 1/4 of all the 12 approaches (from the North) and maybe 10% of the 30 ascents over our home in Moss Beach are way, WAY below the FAA's minimum altitude. I realize that this is arguably the 2nd most scenic approach around (behind Carmel, from what I hear), and I'm glad folks can enjoy it, but…

Mike, does it surprise you that Americans would exercise their 1st Amendment rights of free speech and peaceful assembly to disagree with the President?
I'm not sure if you're reacting to what they're saying, or that they're expressing it publicly.
What's your point?

Ray, if the owner of the land is a farmer who makes a living by farming, it's in the entire community's interest to butt out and let him/her farm the land as they see fit. If the landowner is a developer who makes a living developing properties, it's difficult to see those [contracted] farming activities as anything but a means to an end -- that is, circumventing environmental restrictions and developing the property. Can you, Ray, or any of your cohorts honestly tell me that disking environmentally…

Let's face it. For the last six years we've been ruled by an administration whose response to "inconvenient truth" is to shoot the messengers. Dick Cheney & George W. Bush have already set the tone for the nation. Their disregard for the environment, laws protecting the environment, and those who enforce environmental laws are well documented. I applaud those who step up to document illegal or questionable land use activities. If they wish to remain anonymous, I certainly understand. Even if the…

One way to increase the Coastside's tsunami preparedness 1000% is for lots of us coastsiders to get the tsunami info and warnings ourselves, directly. It's really easy. Just go to http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/watcher/tsunamiwatcher.html and sign up. For the 11/15 quake & tsunami, I got warnings on both email and my cell phone between 6-7am -- plenty of check out all the possibilities. Barry, you might consider signing up and posting warnings on Coastsider.com. Coastside.net could send subscribers an…

Yow, Carl!
Many who read your posts here will think you're a certified wacko.
However, the point of view you express is infinitely more sane, rational, and well-considered than the "prevailing wisdom."
Thanks for sharing it here.

> Dan, > What point were you even trying to make?? Ray, I was giving you some encouragement to "think outside the box." From the volume of your verbage above, it's apparent that you don't understand why anyone *wouldn't* want Hwy 1 to be four lanes along the coast. Since you don't understand or identify with the values of the people you're attempting to persuade, only those who already agree with you find your arguments compelling. Here are my own reasons for limiting Hwy 1 to two lanes: +…

If you're referring to 4-lane Hwy 1 as an "improvement," you don't *get it*.

p.s. - What we really need now is Californians for Property Rights to ensure that local governments and CalTrans follow Measure A. To the letter!

I just got back from Pacifica. I've *never* been *so happy* to go grocery shopping! I was grinning from ear to ear the entire trip.

Sam & Mary, Why on earth would I need the HMB Review when I can get local news AND a FREE exchange of ideas here on Coastsider? I don't blame the Review for having its biases. For the Review -- or any publication -- all you have to do is "follow the money," and you'll know who calls the shots. The biggest advertisers get their point of view promoted in the paper. It's "pay to play." That's why Coastsider is so great. The opinions of the authors, writers, and contributors aren't filtered or suppressed…

Wow, that Mary's got a good sense of humor on her. 1. In her letter, Mary blames "*they*" ("that small, but vocal, group of self-appointed arbiters of community values who consistently find fault with anybody who dares to advocate for our Coastside children") with defeating Measure S. 2. Then she reveals to us (for the first time!) the concept of a straw man! 3. Then she builds, once again, the straw man she built in her original letter -- about that small group of politically-motivated people who…

Yow, Carl! There's no doubt that in other places, landslides get repaired more quickly. That's because for most landslides, you push the dirt off the road, do something to keep more from falling, and open it up again. The big difference with the Slide was that the entire roadbed was sliding down the hill! You couldn't just "build a bridge," as many proposed, because there would be no solid ground that could bear the load of either end of the bridge. Check out http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/stormdamageroute1/images/devils_slide_roadway_repair.pdf…

I think CalTrans deserves our heartfelt gratitude and recognition for a job *very* well done. When have you seen a government agency do so much so quickly, communicating progress, and making such a big impact, especially on a relatively small number of affected residents? I, for one, can't thank Bijan Sartipi and his crew enough for doing the job that they've done. I don't see how they could have done any better. Isn't this how we would want all of our government agencies to work? I'd like to encourage…

CPR is an organization that advocates against restrictions on property rights - especially development rights - no? My understanding is that Terry & others started the organization a while back to push back against acquisition of open space and farmland by eminent domain. (BTW, I support & agree with MROSD's policy *against* the use of eminent domain for acquiring open space.) Since the eminent domain issue is resolved (the U.S. Supreme Court decision notwithstanding), CPR's focus seems to be on…

A fundraiser to build more houses, bring home prices down, pave the blufftops, and increase traffic. I love it!
"Boogie with us to reduce open space and circumvent environmental protections on the coast!" Woo-hoo!!
I suppose, with the Housing Bubble bursting & all, that developers and commercial property owners no longer have the cash to fund their own interests.
I can't wait to see the bake sales and lemonade stands popping up in the coming weeks!
Too funny.

Don't worry about the local businesses -- just use eminent domain to acquire the right-of-way. ;-)
JUST KIDDING!
