HMB High’s dropout rate soars under new reporting system

August 03, 2008
WOW Thanks for putting words in my mouth! Where did I imply that, "the EG staff doesn't deserve credit for their remarkable progress." Having student taught AT El Granada and probably having spent far more time there than you I am fully aware of how hard the teachers work! My point was the differences in communities. Those who post here don't seem to be at all aware of the actual groups of children who go to these schools. EG has a different group of ESL students than the other schools. Less newcomers,…

HMB High’s dropout rate soars under new reporting system

August 01, 2008
"El Granada's English-language learners have been performing substantially better on their English language arts tests than have those at Farallone View or Hatch. Do we know why? Is it something the other sites can learn from and replicate? I" It is not as simple as test scores by school. Farrallone View has the newcomer's class, a class set up because of Proposition 227, where you get only one year to learn English before you are mainstreamed. Those kids take the state tests in English, even if…

Letter: Unacceptable conduct at football game!

June 16, 2008
Excuse me! You read one article and judge an entire community. It's like watching Entertainment Tonight and the behaviour of someone like Paris Hilton and believing that all Americans act like her. There was no nudity (streaking) at the football game where the egg throwing occured. There wasn't a large amount of eggs thrown so that the administration could stop it or be aware of it. Other than one article, where else have you gotton your information from? While I was not at the homecoming game, my…

Stones, eggs, and slurs hurled at visitors to Friday’s HMB High game

November 09, 2007
The article posted on this website is based on hearsay. All the comments afterwards, besides being another excuse to attack the school district by some, are also based on hearsay. Have any of you actually talked to anyone, I mean ANYONE, who was at the game? I am not excusing the egg throwing, something that actually occurred. I have talked to my son about the incident and am having a hard time getting him to understand it was not OK to throw eggs. He did not throw the eggs, but unlike any of YOU…

Almost died last week, again

I agree. Slow down in thick fog!!! I ended up just at the accident (which was on the overpass going over 1, directly next to the onramp and off ramps). When I was there, I saw 4 cars, (one was on top of another) and IN FRONT of them a police car. People where out of their cars screaming at the oncoming traffic to SLOW DOWN. I got back onto 1, went all the way back down to Pacifica, turned around and took 280 to SF, & 19th Ave. (By the time I made it back up the hill they had closed the onramp to…

Opinion: SamTrans sneaks bus route onto Montara neighborhood streets

July 07, 2007
Maureen, At the risk of opening a can of worms about the busing issue (It has been debated vehemently on this website. There is tons of information out there on the failure of school bonds, relating to the Wavecrest issue, and all that, and how it relates to busing.), lack of money. The school district feels that it is better, or more important, to spend money on items such as books, classroom supplies, and teachers, than on buses. I, as a parent of a high school student, and as a former sub in the…

Opinion: SamTrans sneaks bus route onto Montara neighborhood streets

July 05, 2007
Why is having a bus route through Montara such a bad thing? The route is taking the place of the school busing that disappeared about 5 years ago. (If you've lived here then you will remember that the school bus went up Sunshine Valley road and through the backwoods of Montara starting or ending at Farallone View.) If you have a child who goes to Cunha or the High School this new busing is a good thing. Based on the amount of traffic going to the High School every morning during the school year,…

Cunha returns to old schedule, cancels buses

September 14, 2006
Wow Rob.... First of all the children who are bused from Moonridge to other schools are bused because of the desegregation laws. Otherwise, most of the Latino population would only go to one school. Those same laws apply to other school districts in California such as San Francisco. I believe the federal government helps pay for this as desegregation IS a federal law. Secondly, now that more “non English speakers” attend Farralone View the test scores will go down. When a non-English speaker…

Opinion: City Council to HMB kids: Drop dead

August 15, 2006
I agree with Mike. Apparently some don't get sarcasm. But he is right, for example, that "park" will never get built. Well, let me rephrase that, it will get built in about 10 or so years after tons and tons of political rankling on the issue. Meanwhile the Coast will lose more land as more mega-houses get built. There will be no new parks built because that doesn't attract the tourist dollar. Nor will the roads be improved because some seem to believe that if you build more roads, more people will…

Letter:  Why hasn’t anything been done about the evening commute?

July 12, 2006
This week the morning commute has been the commute from h***. It took 50 min. to get from MB to HMB. It takes me a bit longer to get to 92 'cause I have to drop my kid off at HMB HS but today getting back on to 1 took forever. It has gotten worse and you CANNOT blame the schools for this because school is out. So, all the traffic in April-June probably, mostly, was not school traffic. Why is traffic worse in the morning? For me, I leave later in the summer to go to a different job. How about others?…

Measure S loses with 61% of the vote

June 08, 2006
Mr. Jones, I am not sure where the figure of $300,000 comes from for spending per class but I am sure it is an average amount (if accurate) that includes things like textbooks, pay for teachers as well as other staff, electricity, water, etc., testing fees, classroom supplies, as well as salaries for higher ups in the school system and so on. I must mention that by state law, special education MUST be paid for BEFORE anything else (including electricity and water). Special education classes have…

Caltrans gives HMB a chance to discuss traffic light

May 19, 2006
Oh boo hoo. Traffic flow on Kelly will be backed up. (Who takes Kelly anyway but people from the south?) Apparently you have absolutely NO IDEA how bad traffic is on Highway 1 from Montara to HMB. It takes from 1 to 1.5 hours to go 6 miles, with Fridays being the exception for some odd reason. People from the north do not have the luxury of driving their kids all the way to Cunha or the high school, it simply takes too long. And I highly doubt that there are many who send their kids to Hatch from…
