Farmer and Cowman Share Center-Stage at Coastside Children’s Theater Conservancy Production of Oklahoma
The Coastal Repertory Theatre’s Coastal Theatre Conservatory revels in a heartfelt rendition of a musical theater classic, “Oklahoma.” Productions begin May 6, 2011.
More than 100 talented Coastside children take the stage in this beloved production. Performers may range from 5-14 years, but they demonstrate consistent talent beyond their age. A record number of 13 actors graduate this season from the unique community children’s theatre after more than 8 years under the award-winning tutelage of Michael Lederman. These rising stars shine on stage in the lead Mid-West plough-hand and cattleman roles.
The first musical penned by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, making its Broadway debut in 1943, “Oklahoma” has enjoyed numerous worldwide revivals and an Academy Award-winning film adaptation. Its infectious music is among the best loved in theater.
The Coastal Rep set, like the story and characters, stands tall and proud in its simplicity. Audience members are transported back to frontier days where hard working folks struggle to overcome difficulties and differences to birth a new state—all set against an engaging, humorous romantic triangular struggle winningly portrayed by the talented children’s cast.
“The single most engaging experience with a Children’s production is professional collaboration. A show with such a rich history and such young actors is a major undertaking, but I am consistently amazed by the committed, talented and hardworking team,” says director, Michael Leaderman. “The chaotic, trial and error environment yields a multitude of ah-ha moments and pure theatrical joy. Our young actors go beyond honing performance skills – they experience hands-on the magic of theater in the making, are a part of the process, and become confident in their own contributions. A life-long love of theater is born.”
Dates and show times for “Oklahoma” are May 6 through May 16, 2011; Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2pm.
