My heart was in my throat as I peered through the rolled down car window, into the mirrored sunglasses of the patrolman.  The flashing red and blue lights flicked across my rear view mirror and I tried to keep my hand steady as I passed over my documents.
“Do you mind telling me what Blue Blanket Improv is?”
My mind raced.  It was not the question I was expecting.  I stammered, “uh, well, they’re a group of improvisational actors that perform comedy over in Half Moon Bay.  And, see, they make up these funny scenes based on suggestions from the audience.”  I willed myself to shut up, but the message didn’t make it to my mouth which kept going, “and they create characters that come to life on stage, and sometimes they have to work in these outrageous constraints like speaking in gibberish or not finishing their own sentences or having someone else control their movement or voice.”  The words were tumbling out of my mouth, I was sure, but it was as though I were watching the whole thing from above, my body paying no attention to the signals from my brain.  “There’s one thing they do, that’s like a traffic stop, where one actor comes up with a crazy story about why he’s speeding, and needs to pantomime it to his passenger so when the officer questions them separately, it seems like they have a consistent story.”  I come to the conclusion that my mouth has decided it no longer wishes to live, and intends to take all the rest of me down in a textbook case of police-assisted suicide.
“Huh.  That must be entertaining.  But as far as I can tell, this “Buy 3, Get 1 Free” Blue Blanket Loyalty Card is not actually proof of insurance,” he said, handing back my license.  “I’ll just keep this for evidence,” he said, waving me on my way….
