Free public forum welcomes Kathay Feng, California Common Cause Executive Director, with special showing of documentary film, "Gerrymandering"

On Thursday, March 3, the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company welcomes special guest Kathay Feng, Executive Director for California Common Cause, for an in-depth and timely discussion focused on redistricting reform - in particular the effects of the newly-passed Propositions 11 and 20 on the California voter.  Soon after the census data's expected mid-March release, which takes place every 10 years, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission will draw new district lines for U.S. Congress and the California Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization. Compared to the closed-door process of the Legislature, for many Californians, the new commission process is seen as more transparent and fair to the democratic process.

How ugly was the redistricting process in the past?  How will the passage and implementation of Props. 11 and 20 affect California citizens for the next decade? How diverse and representative is a 14-person commission?  How well can a group of lay persons tackle this enormous task? Ms. Feng will draw on her extensive knowledge of California redistricting issues and discuss the politics of what led up to this historic change as well as what we might expect to happen with the new commission. The public is invited to participate in the discussion, which will be moderated by Lenny Mendonca, director of McKinsey & Company and co-founder of the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company.

As part of the evening's presentation, Ms. Feng will show a 20 minute segment of Jeff Reichert's new documentary film, "Gerrymandering."

Ten percent of proceeds from all dinner sales at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company that evening will be donated to the Cabrillo Education Foundation.
