SAM wins award for financial reporting

Let’s face it, sewers and financial reports are in a pretty tight race when it comes to combining importance with inherent boredom.

However, Sewer Authority Midcoastside (SAM) just won a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report 03-04 [PDF]. SAM says it’s "the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting" and I have no reason to dispute this.

All kidding aside, it’s great to see our local agencies winning awards for their public reporting.

SEWER AUTHORITY MID-COASTSIDE RECEIVES TOP GOVERNMENTAL AWARD IN FINANCIAL REPORTING

Half Moon Bay, CA (August 24, 2005) – A Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to the Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside (SAM) by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence is the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting. It was presented to General Manager John F. Foley III in recognition of SAM’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for fiscal year 2003-04. The attainment of this award represents a significant accomplishment by a government agency and its management.

“We are delighted to receive this award as it represents the SAM Board of Directors’ continuing commitment to sound financial planning and reporting, and recognizes the hard work of our dedicated staff and business partners," said Manager Foley.

In 2004, SAM submitted its very first comprehensive financial report. The report clearly outlined the agency’s financial status in a “spirit of full disclosure” to GFOA. GFOA’s team of impartial judges awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting upon SAM’s very first attempt to attain the award.
