Sheriff’s Blotter: March 31 to April 5
The big news was an attempted murder by machete in La Honda. The rest was routine: a tailgate stolen from a pickup at Gray Whale Cove (before the Slide was closed), a break-in the HMB Yacht Club, graffiti on highway railings in Pescadero, auto burglary in Montara, a mental health evaluation in Montara, a warrant arrest in Princeton, and a missing hiker on Montara Mountain.
Theft - 484 PC (Misdemeanor/ Felony)

Devil’s Slide, #06-1895
Deputies responded to Gray Whale Cove in Devil’s Slide on the report of a theft from a vehicle. Deputies made contact with the victim who stated that an unknown suspect took the tailgate from his Ford F-150 pick up while he was fishing. The victim did not see anyone in the parking lot and there were no witnesses.
Commercial Burglary - 459 PC (Felony)

Princeton, #06-1913
Sheriff’s office Deputies responded to The half Moon Bay Yacht Club in Princeton on the report of a burglary. An unknown suspect had broken a window and gained entry but nothing was taken. Deputies were informed by the reporting person that nothing of value is kept inside the building.
Vandalism – 594 PC (Misdemeanor)

Pescadero, #06-1919
Sometime on 4/01/06, an unknown suspect spray painted graffiti on a row of “K-rail” at the intersection of Highway One and Pescadero Road. Caltrans is the owner of the “K-rail” and was notified of the damage.
Auto Burglary – 459 PC (Felony)

Unknown suspect broke into the victim’s car while it was parked at Montara State Beach and took her wallet.
Mental Health Evaluation Hold – 5150 W&I

Montara, #06-1971
Deputies contacted a resident on 16th Street in Montara and determined that he was feeling suicidal. Deputies took the individual into custody for his safety and he was transported to San Mateo County general Hospital to be evaluated by the Mental Health Staff.
Warrant Arrest – 594 PC (Misdemeanor)

Princeton, #06-1973
A man, 21 of half Moon Bay was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. he was stopped while driving in Princeton for a vehicle code violation. Deputies discovered that he had an outstanding warrant for Misdemeanor Vandalism. He was arrested and booked into the Maguire Main Jail in Redwood City.

4/05/06, 1903 hours
La Honda, #06-1994
Samuel Bakalian, 39 a transient was arrested for attempted murder, mayhem and possession of a stolen vehicle. Bakalian was found sleeping in a white pick-up truck on private property at an address on La Honda Road and asked to leave by the victim. As the victim was walking away, Bakalian ran up behind the victim and struck him in the back of the head with a machete. The victim then turned and grabbed the machete with his hand before Bakalian could swing a second time causing several lacerations to the victim’s hand. The victim pulled out a pocket knife and started stabbing Bakalian in self defense.
Bakalian walked away from the victim and sat down in front of Apple Jack’s. Bakalian was contacted by Sheriff’s Office Deputies and medically evaluated by La Honda Fire Personnel. Because of his injuries, Bakalian was transported by Life Flight helicopter to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. The victim was transported to Stanford Hospital by ambulance because his wounds were not as life threatening.
Bakalian was later released from Stanford Hospital, arrested and booked into the Maguire Main Jail in Redwood City for Attempted Murder, Mayhem and Possession of a stolen vehicle. The truck Bakalian was driving was reported stolen out of Wyoming.
Missing Juvenile

Montara, #06-2012
A 15 year old juvenile from Moss Beach was dropped off by his mother at the south end of Devil’s Slide so he could hike to the top of Montara Mountain. When the juvenile did not return at the pre-planned time his mother contacted The Sheriff’s Office and a search was started by Sheriff’s office Patrol Deputies as well as The Sheriff’s office of Emergency Services. Deputies searched Montara Mountain in 4x4 vehicles and the juvenile was later located in San Pedro Valley park on the north side of Montara Mountain. The juvenile was then re-united with his mother.
