Press release

By on Tue, October 20, 2009

On Saturday October 24th, The Visionary Edge will screen the One Peace at a Time, a film about a messed up world and how we could fix it. The event will be co-hosted by and presented at the Community United Methodist Church in Half  Moon Bay.

Turk Pipkin’s One Peace at a Time is an inspiring feature documentary highlighting solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. Filmed in twenty countries, it includes the insights of Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Physicist Steven Chu, (President Obama’s Secretary of Energy), Dr. Helene Gayle (CEO of CARE, International), American legend Willie Nelson and many others, while featuring the music of Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and more.

Pipkin sought the answer to one basic question: Can we provide basic rights - water, nutrition, education, healthcare and a sustainable and peaceful environment -to every child on earth? As Desmond Tutu reminds him, "Remember the sea is actually made up of drops of water. What you do, where you are is significant. In Africa they say ‘There is only one way to eat an elephant - one piece at a time’".

Saturday, October 24th. Doors will open at 7:00pm, event begins at 7:30 at the Community United Methodist Church, 777 Miramontes Street (at Johnston), HMB. The event is free; donations will be   accepted to cover the costs of screening. Call 650-207-3440 for information and reservations.  Babysitting will be provided for $5 per child for the evening with a 24 hour advance reservation.

NOAA says El Niño will bring a wetter winter

NOAA
NOAA's seasonal precipitation forecast for California is "wetter than usual".

By on Sun, October 18, 2009

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is forecasting a wetter than usual winter for California, thanks to to El Niño.

"We expect El Niño to strengthen and persist through the winter months, providing clues as to what the weather will be like during the period," says Mike Halpert, deputy director of the Climate Prediction Center – a division of the National Weather Service. "Warmer ocean water in the equatorial Pacific shifts the patterns of tropical rainfall that in turn change the strength and position of the jetstream and storms over the Pacific Ocean and the U.S."

Winter Solstice Ritual coming, singers needed now

By on Sun, October 18, 2009

The deepest time of darkness is the time when light re-emerges. This seasonal truth also occurs within the individual soul, between people who care deeply for each other, and among groups whose lives are bound together by larger circumstances.  The winter solstice ritual is a participatory, communal celebration of this time of year and these processes in spirit.  We invite you, your family, and friends to join us for an extraordinary opportunity to reconnect with yourself, with community, and with life.  Please bring an unscented candle with holder for the altar.

This ritual was crafted by Cynthia McReynolds in 1979 and has been celebrated in many settings since then.  The ritual is enriched by the music and spirit of Joan McMillan and the Coastside Voices of the Coming Tribe.  All are welcome to the ritual.

Rockaway hillside for sale in Pacifica

By on Thu, October 15, 2009

Pacifica Riptide has the details on 57 acres of hillside up for auction with a reserve of $940,000. From the listing:

The entire property is within the city of Pacifica and a prior owner submitted a plan in 2001 for an eleven-lot subdivision, with the balance of the property (47± acres) to be donated to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to be used for a trailhead in order to improve public access to Sweeney Ridge. Other options for the property include development of several ocean-view, gated estate compounds with private trail system for hiking and riding horses. The combination of the property’s spectacular ocean views, location next to Golden Gate Recreation Area, proximity to San Francisco and residential zoning provides a new owner with opportunity to create both real estate and conservation values from the purchase of the property at a significant discount, with the added benefit of short-term seller financing. Please Note: Sketch plans are conceptual only. Neither the Seller nor its agents have submitted plans or made any applications to a public agency.
