HMC City Council, March 4 meeting

By on Mon, March 17, 2008

The March 4 meeting of the Half Moon Bay City Council was shorter than usual.

The only non-routine item was the rescinding of a coastal development permit for a lot merger and rezoning.  The zoning change was separated out so that the Coastal Commission could consider it.

The discussion of planning-director permits was pulled out of the consent calendar, and former planning commissioner Jack McCarthy commented on the inappropriateness of a permit for the creation of a corporation yard for CCWD’s pipeline project on Bev Cunha Country Lane (formerly Sewer Plant Road).

Press release

By on Mon, March 17, 2008

On Thursday, March 20th at 7:00 PM the Half Moon Bay Library will host the renowned children’s musical group Colibri.  Colibri, Spanish for hummingbird, is a duo that presents lively, interactive journeys through Latin America.

Using an exciting array of traditional folk instruments, Lichi Fuentes and Alisa Peres create a bridge linking children in the U.S. with those of the Spanish-speaking world. Their extensive repertoire includes selections from many different countries - from a Bolivian festival song about a mother dancing with her baby, to a Chilean song about worms, as well as popular Mexican singalongs.

Children leave Colibri concerts tapping a new rhythmn, remembering some words in Spanish, or wondering what life might be like in faraway places.

Letter: Montara charity food drive, egg hunt car rally, and Easter kids party this weekend

Letter to the editor

By on Fri, March 14, 2008

Sunday, March 16, Montara residents can participate in the charity food drive in one or both of two ways.

Put nonperishable food in a bag, then put your bag out in front of your house (in Montara) before 1pm on Sunday, March 16. Every little bit helps—we collected hundreds of bags last year! If possible, please ensure the bag is visible from the street.

You’re also invited to join the hunt! We’re having a car rally "egg hunt" to find the bags around Montara! It’s lots of fun for kids, and whole families are encouraged to participate together. Arrive at 1 PM on Sunday, March 16 in the Montara Post Office parking lot. Not only will you be helping needy people, but might earn cool prizes!

Participants must sign in. This is a Montara Greenhouse event put on by the ReachOut Youth Service Group to benefit Coastside Hope.

On Saturday, March 15, kids, kids in grades K-5 are invited to come for a wild and fun time at our Story of Easter Kids Party. From 10an to 12:30pm, we’ll be turning the CCP building at Farallone View School into a funhouse of live gameshow competitions, karaoke, crafts and general silliness. PLUS, Story Time Theater presents "Unwrapping Easter", the true story of Easter’s wonderful meaning! NOTE: This event has spiritual content.

Yesterday was a beautiful day for a paddle boat ride in Princeton Harbor.  Our friends Roy and Al have been building and refining this mini paddle- wheel boat for 4 years, which is a harbor-worthy - if not sea-worthy - vessel named the Paddellac Roy*Al.

We were fortunate enough to be able to join them, and took a few snapshots.

We also took some short video clips:

Coastsider’s Gallery returns and “Grease” is the word

By on Fri, March 7, 2008

We’ve been working on Coastsider’s Gallery ever since the redesign. It’s still a work in progress, but we’re re-launching it as a beta so we can run our extensive album of photos from Half Moon Bay High School’s production of Grease, which opens tonight.

To visit the gallery, click on the link in the top menu bar.  To visit our Grease albums, click on any photo in the following story, or just click here.

We’ll be adding photos and working on the gallery this weekend, so things may change or seem a little out of whack. If you see a problem, try reloading the page, or try again later.

By Natalie Moyce

Natalie Moyce is a Senior at HMBHS and can be seen as "Frenchie" in the Spring musical Grease.

You can always tell when musical season is about to start just by walking through the halls of Half Moon Bay High. Rumors of possible plays run high, whispers of audition dates spur excitement, and a general nervous buzz fills the air. Auditions roll around, and you wonder how you’re going to sing in front of an audience when your legs shake in front of just a few fellow singers. Mr. Ward, our faithful director, will smile at you encouragingly, and you walk away practically positive that you didn’t make the cut. If you’re lucky, you will be off to callbacks, and audition again, this time with other, often older students, wishing you were brave enough to act the way they can. Soon, the day comes, and you see your name on the list! Regardless of what part you get, you still end up with your heart jumping at the prospects of the journey you’re about to embark upon. You learn lines slowly but surely, often letting one slip impromptu in every day conversation. You hum songs to yourself between classes, and practice dance steps while sitting at your desk. Before you know it, opening night is approaching fast. Costumes haven’t been fitted, everyone’s forgetting lines, props are missing, songs haven’t been choreographed, and you’re sure that this play will never come together in time.

But then the last week comes along, and suddenly, everything falls into place. Not only are lines remembered, but they make you laugh when hearing them, though you know them like the back of your hand. Dance numbers gain a rhythm they never had before, and fill you with an energy to make every step count. Costumes, the band, and the lights make everything seem larger than life, and hit you with the realization that this is a real theater now, and the audience is going to love this show.

Such is the experience of participating in the musical at Half Moon Bay High, something that many people choose to do annually. "Every year that I do the musical, I get to work with the same group of people that I’ve always known, with some new faces and talent each time, and it’s great when we all get together to make something worth seeing," says Erinn McHale, a senior this year who has participated in the musical throughout her high school career. She plays the part of Jan, one of the Pink Ladies in this year’s Grease, a popular movie and musical for all. The title alone will draw an enthusiastic audience, who will discover that, although the well-known plot and quirky characters are the same, some of the songs from the movie are missing. However, they will be even more entertained by this original version of the musical, which includes songs and scenes not present in the movie and avoids the clichés of the same-old Grease that everyone has seen on the small screen.

Tickets are on sale at Bay Book for $8 for students and children $12 for adults. Grease opens this Friday night, at 8 PM in the Student Center at Half Moon Bay High School. Shows will be Friday and Sat at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm this weekend and next.  All those students will be standing behind the curtain, awaiting your eager eyes and ears, so that they might have the opportunity to entertain you. We hope to see you there.

Letter: Save Our Shores Ocean Leadership Conference starting March 12

Letter to the editor

By on Wed, March 5, 2008

Save our Shores is back! We put together a Ocean Leadership Conference at the Harbor House starting next Wed. evening 6-9 pm. We’ll look at the issues of watershed health, fisheries and the Marine Life Protection Act, erosion, Pillar Point Harbor, and more.

Oceans need our help now more than ever!  Declining fisheries, increasing quantities of marine debris, and oil and toxins polluting near shore waters are just a few of the threats facing our oceans today.  Save Our Shores is holding an Ocean Leadership Conference in March for Coastside communities in the Half Moon Bay area!  Participants will learn about current marine conservation issues such as Marine Protected Areas, marine debris, and local coastal watersheds.  Presentations will be given by the honorable Fred Keeley, Bob Breen, Brenda Donald, and other members of the Coastside communities.

The conference will also provide hands-on tools for empowering participants to become advocates for healthy oceans.  After the conference, participants will work with Save Our Shores staff to assess the needs of Coastside communities and then design and implement activities to engage their community in ocean conservation.

The conference will be held at the Harbor House Conference Center in the Pillar Point Harbor, beginning March 12th.  It is free and open to anyone ready to learn about marine conservation issues, and enthusiastic about becoming an ocean conservation leader in Coastside communities.  Anyone interested in participating in the conference should contact Chris Reeves, Conference Coordinator at [email protected] or call: (831) 462-5660 extension 5# for an application.
