Feral ferret in HMB?

Letter

By on Mon, July 20, 2009

I think I saw a ferret on the coastal trail this morning near the Plover sanctuary. A handful of birds were quite unhappy with its presence.

So first, if it wasn’t a ferret, could it be something local and native? If memory serves, it looks a lot like what I’m pulling up on google.

If it was, considering they are an environmental threat, whom should I contact?

cheers,
ckw

An open letter from my daughter to the Coastside Orchestra

Letter

By on Thu, July 16, 2009

About a year ago, my dad showed Charles Calvert (my piano teacher’s husband) one of his best garage sale finds ever. A violin. This violin travelled with my family when we moved to California. On the back, the words "Phila. School Dist." were branded into the wood. Charles volunteered to fix up and re-varnish the instrument for me.

It was a great surprise that one of our hang-on-the wall violins was actually a very nice instrument! Every Monday at my piano lesson I would look around for, and sometimes see the violin, newly sanded, or waiting for its most recent coat of varnish to dry. Over the weeks and months it transformed from a collection of reddish, scummy bits of wood, into a beautiful amber musical instrument, with tiger stripes down its back. The words would not come off without sanding clear through the back, and so anyone who looks will know its origin. Finally, after nearly a year, Charles said he had gotten as far as he could go in the job.

The violin was not yet playable because it needed new pegs fit to the peg holes, as well as a sound post and other small but important features.  Charles referred us to his friend Carlos, who could fix all this.  But making these repairs was going to cost more than my family could afford.

Luckily for me, the Coastside Orchestra granted me a $300 scholarship for the job.

Just a few weeks back, I was surprised and overjoyed to be greeted at my piano lesson by Carlos, who had personally delivered my violin on his motorcycle!

I am so grateful to Charles, Carlos, and the Coastside Orchestra for their help in restoring the most beautiful violin I’ve had. (And more importantly, the most stunning sounding violin I’ve ever played!) Thanks again to everyone involved.

Sincerely,

Trieste "Fizzy" Devlin, age 14

Be Swindlers or Create Integrity: Build the Beachwood Park

Letter

By on Wed, July 15, 2009

Dolder said the city’s current goal is to "repackage" the [24 acre] property so that, five or 10 years from now, it can be sold to a developer for as much as $15 million.

Wait just one minute - you reneged on Keenan the developer, lost a lawsuit, proposed to knowingly or fraudulently pay the lawsuit through proposition funds and I-Bank money to build a park and now you want to sell this property to a developer!

This makes no sense - build the intended park; that was your intention and it should be completed well within two years.  You want a 24 acre park and was willing to use Hill, Yee and Mullins to do your bidding in Sacramento.  No park and we will all know HMB politicians are crooks intent on swindling the taxpayers.

What is the matter with Mayor Muller and the City Council?  You promised the people of HMB a park as they needed more open space and recreational facilities for mixed use - for citizens and visitors.

Does anyone see a continued problem in the judgement and decisions of the politicians in this community?

BUILD THE PARK and keep your integrity intact with Sacramento legislators and the statewide taxpayers that fund special interest projects like parks and the I-Bank… or fold your tent!

4 New Escapees from Camp Glenwood

Letter

By on Mon, July 13, 2009

It is time to close Camp Glenwood this month and return all of the inmates to the Youth Service Center for rehabilitation!
Nothing has changed - 4 escapees this time demonstrates a lack of staff supervision.  Build a double fence, add video and roving supervision.  Until that is done, no more commitments to the facility.
The new Chief Probation Officer, Stu Forrest, has no chance of getting a handle on this problem until major reforms, policies and rebuilding of this facility is completed.  We are using outdated facilities to use undated programming, but they have to complement one another and they just don’t. A walk-away facility no longer serves the public as they did in the 1960s.  The tone and attitudes are hardened by many of the juveniles today and going to CYA or today’s California Department Of Corrections and Rehabilitation - Juvenile Justice Division is not an option to deter escapes!
It is time for a comprehensive Compliance Review of our court and probation system.  That audit should establish a baseline of performance and deficiencies should be corrected in 120 days and in a year, another audit should be performed to measure result to start a longitudinal study so we can have a history of what is really going on.
If the BOS, the Juvenile Court and the probation department can’t do this, then it is time to go back to the Grand Jury whose last finding on Camp Glenwood was flawed!
It is also time to clean up the old Hillcrest Facility next to the YSC - get probation community service work crews out to clean up and set things in order.  Well over a year ago, this facility, I am told was in the process of being deconstructed.  It is time it was done or turn the facility into a working rehabilitation model for some program.
